You'll tend to find the Swiss a little more conservative, everything takes time, less gushy maybe

Gushy people are NOT appreciated

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

Hi Lynds

I am a kiwi who has just touched down in Switzerland, it's looking like we will possibly end up living in Zurich too.
I'm enjoying the snow and the wonderful experiences so far.
I'm into sport and walking, cycling, badminton and love a good laugh about anything and everything.
Cheers
Shelly

Hiya,

I'm Lyndsey (Lynds to friends). I'm a 38 year old lass from Glasgow, Scotland who's starting a whole new life and job in Zurich. I'm (well about to be!) a Talent Acquisition Director for a global pharmaceutical company and I will work across the US, Europe, Middle East and Africa. I've worked in this geographical area for many years and I've worked in recruitment for 15 years. I start my new role in February and I'll move to Zurich permanently by May/June 2015. I'm excited about the move, but also terrified. Hence why I Googled "Ex parts in Switzerland forums". I get a great relocation assistance package with my new job, including language lessons, which I reckon will be invaluable! Let's hope my 38 year old brain can retain the information.

It will be nice to start chatting to some people and hopefully make some new friends. I'm aiming to get my work life balance in better order this year, so I'd like to do more walking, meeting up with friends, comedy gigs, going to the cinema etc. I also believe I'm one whisker from being classed as a mad cat lady. I'm crazy about all animals though.

Not quite sure how all this works, but hello!

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

Hello all

Thought I would post here rather than start a new thread as I, too, am a new Scot in Zurich (from Edinburgh, but studied in Glasgow for 5 years)! I am 22 and here for 6 months working at the University (but I live in Affoltern am Albis).

Looking to meet some more people, sample all the local beers(!), (drastically) improve my German, and play some tennis. If anyone shares all/any of these interests then it would be great to hear from you

Thanks
David

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

Lynds, you are going through everything that an expat goes through when moving to a new country. Just a few tips......

Don't rush it.
Try and learn the language (German.)
Don't make comparisons. There are things you will love about Switzerland and things you will hate.
Don't spend all your time with Expats. Engage the Swiss and you will learn much more about them and their culture.
Keep a sensible work/life balance. Work is for now, life is for much longer.
Switzerland is a great multi-national country full of migrants from all over the world. Don't focus too much on the fact you are from Scotland. Everybody is from somewhere!
Relax and have a wonderful time you will love it here!

Enjoy.

Martin
