Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

Hiya,

I'm Lyndsey (Lynds to friends). I'm a 38 year old lass from Glasgow, Scotland who's starting a whole new life and job in Zurich. I'm (well about to be!) a Talent Acquisition Director for a global pharmaceutical company and I will work across the US, Europe, Middle East and Africa. I've worked in this geographical area for many years and I've worked in recruitment for 15 years. I start my new role in February and I'll move to Zurich permanently by May/June 2015. I'm excited about the move, but also terrified. Hence why I Googled "Ex parts in Switzerland forums". I get a great relocation assistance package with my new job, including language lessons, which I reckon will be invaluable! Let's hope my 38 year old brain can retain the information.

It will be nice to start chatting to some people and hopefully make some new friends. I'm aiming to get my work life balance in better order this year, so I'd like to do more walking, meeting up with friends, comedy gigs, going to the cinema etc. I also believe I'm one whisker from being classed as a mad cat lady. I'm crazy about all animals though.

Not quite sure how all this works, but hello!

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

From one Scot to another, Lyndsey, you won't miss the old country.

Sure, the 'Swiss welcome' can be a slight culture shock, and so long as you keep in mind that what constitutes good manners can change from one country to another, you'll appreciate how smoothly things run over here, the weather, cleanliness, modernity...

Basically, Zürich is the anti-Glasgow.

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

What you mean there are no junkies/drunks everywhere spitting and pissing, shouting and screaming until the early morning?

No rain, cloudy weather and smell of beer everywhere?

I find that hard to believe!!!

Sounds like you need to give me a crash course on the "Swiss welcome" and what constitutes good manners lol.

I hope you're all as friendly in person if we ever get the chance to meet! I'm a little overwhelmed by it all at the moment.

Hey Moggy,

I was looking for how to do that and couldn't find how to. I've been on plenty of forums in my time and this is the first time I couldn't find out to do it. Your advice is appreciated.

I think the ability to edit one's posts unlocks at post #20, so, you have commited the mere crime of not knowing such in advance. Please don't do it again.

[A proper Swiss welcome would not have the above emoticon and left you guessing. ]

More seriously, the search function sorts results by thread subject content, which is a little frustrating at times, but with some patience and some variation in your search terms, you can generally get to what you want/need.

Sounds like you have time to figure some things out, but if you are hoping to move into a flat when you arrive, looking now will can help you line up appointments for viewings on what I presume will be 1-3 quick recon trips to Zürich. Because of the notice period for leaving a flat, people often advertise upcoming vacancies months in advance.

Comparis.ch and homegate.ch are great places to start looking, I can't think of the others at the moment.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Thank you for your help. I made a mistake on my introduction post and it still didn't seem to allow me the opp to edit ( so that was post no.1). If I understand you correctly, after posting 20 times, you can't edit now anyway? That seems nuts as we all make the odd typo or auto correct does it job to make us look like fools.

Yes I've got some time to figure things out. I posted today because I can feel my anxiety rising thinking about it and figured having some knowledge from you all would help alleviate the fear. I appreciate all your comments.

Re: Hello from Scotland. Moving to Zurich..

Welcome to Zurich! EF is a wonderful resource for everything you need to know about the Swiss lifestyle as well as an entertaining read. If you will try to utilize the "Search" feature in this forum before posting questions, you'll avoid the sarcastic responses. That said, there are great people on here that are always eager to help a newbie!

We've been here for over 2 years and while I love it here, sadly we're heading back to the states next month. (And I can't believe there's not a 'Smilie' with tears...)

You'll tend to find the Swiss a little more conservative, everything takes time, less gushy maybe
