Hi, I'm moving to Switzerland on Friday!

Hi there, I'm an American Chemistry student coming to Switzerland for a 6-month internship in Baden. I'm pretty excited, but also crazy nervous since I haven't packed or managed to find a place to live yet. I took German in high school for three years, but never got the hang of it, so that's making me nervous too. I'm going to rely on my Google Goggles app a lot, I already know it!

A friend of my mom's directed me to this forum, so here I am. I've been lurking for a few weeks, but I'm about to get to work on my first ten posts so I can post to the marketplace section (a last ditch effort to find a place to stay, as I've gotten little response from the other websites I've been using).

Anyway, I've never been to Switzerland before and I don't think I know anyone who has. From what I've learned so far, it's a pretty weird place in a lot of ways.

Hello and welcome- which part of the USA? If you are not used to the cold, be prepared- lots of snow here this week and very cold.

There are a few members from the Baden area- and hopefully some will be along shortly, and perhaps, have some good advice about finding accommodation.

It's always been warmer and with less snow than I was used to in the US, even when I lived up north.

Personally, I like the rather mild climate here.

Heck, I even rode one of my motorcycles this afternoon!

Hope you've organised your Type D visa to get in. You need it if you're going to be here for more than 3 months.

Never fear!

Coming from the US of A you should feel at home pretty quickly.

Welcome to our place. And pretty weird ? Sure, almost as weird as the USA

There WAS some snow on Sunday, but here it is almost gone, and it is no longer as cold. Reason for concern is the accomodation thing.

Check out wgzimmer.ch -- especially as a short term stay, a shared apartment can save hassle, money and provide you immediate friends. I found my apartment there and it is going really well!

Dont worry, the Swiss dont speak German either But seriously, I speak high German fluently and find everyone switches to English when they hear my accent. And nobody seems to mind (I even have to remind my coworkers to stop with the english so I can integrate in the company better!)

Welcome to the forum. Baden is an awesome city. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions on anything. My wife and I have lived in Baden for the last 3 years. We are both science people too. Enjoy your time and best of luck with the transition.

Cheers,
Mike

Hello bottles
if you have no accommodation yet, you could also join couchsurfing, fill out your profile, and try there for a short stay of a night or two with some generous host, or maybe you could even find a flat-share on that site.

Re: Hi, I'm moving to Switzerland on Friday!

I think the Swiss are secretly very impressed with those of us who have English as a first language. It is, after all, spoken by many more people than speak Swiss German. So worry not.

A few strange druggies around Baden station but the rest of the place is cool. Enjoy.
