Me and my children are going to join my husband in Switzerland autumn this year . He has got a job Basel area and very likely we will be staying there ; our children ( 10,7, 6 ) do not speak German ; is that true they would have to go to an international school or they can join state school with additional German classes ; waiting for any useful tips from English families living in CH...

The 6 and 7 year old could definitely go into a Swiss State school and learn the language. The 10 year old might struggle a little more.. but I think it is still not too late.

Hallo, when you do a search in the forum you will find many parents have had the same questions as you have. I suggest you read some topics and answers and you will have a clearer image already. There is a topic 'education', or you can use the search function with some keywords.

Re: new in Switzerland

Our children are 10, 7, 5 and are in swiss schools in Zurich. The older two are in special immersion classes designed for them to learn German well enough to join the regular classes within 6 months. The youngest went right into kindergarten but gets some help with German once a week (or will start to soon). They are loving the program and learning a lot! Good luck!

Hello SkiStorm
thanks for your response .. so all your children are in public school ? this would be great as the private school fees scare me off ; would you be able to tell me more, school hours, after school activities , jobs possibilities for mums for school hours ...

Re: new in Switzerland

I sent you a PM but realized I didn't answer about school hours: 8:15-11:55 then 1:45 -3:30 for the older two. 1st - 3rd class only go to school Monday and Tuesday all day and mornings only Wednesday-Friday. 4-6th class go every day morning and afternoon except Wednesday. Kindergarten is only mornings.
