British Expat looking for apartment-hunting suggestions near Werd, Enge, Bellevue

Hello all, I moved to Zurich (from London) exactly 11 days ago. Started my new job the day after I got here and all I have done since I arrived is view apartments. I was placed in a temp serviced apartment by my employer to get me started or the first week but I moved out on day 4 because it was so small I had bruises getting out of bed everyday (I don't think it helped that my room was in the attic).

So far I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing. In 10 day I have seen approx 21 apartments. I have applied for two, about to apply for the 3rd. The one I really want is in Werd, (not too far from my office at Zürich, Rentenanstalt) but having sent my application in a week ago, I am guessing I was unsuccessful.

I've seen some ok apartments, and I've seen some really awful places.
Im beginning to feel like getting a flight back home but I remembered this site and thought I would post a message on here in the hope that someone [has some tips on where to look next.]

Your employer really should have hooked you up with a good relocation agent who would screen the apartments, make the appointments, drive you around and make applications on your behalf.

If they got you temporary serviced accomodation, I don't know why they wouldn't have done that too.

Assuming that they knowingly recruited you from London and agreed to help you with moving (providing temp serviced accomodation), it is worth telling them that you are having trouble finding a suitable apartment within your budget and that you would like assistance (ie a relocation agent) to help you navigate the local market. Or that you would like 3 months off work to deidcate yourself full-time to the ridiculous charade that is getting an apartment in Zurich

Well, it may be worth looking down in the Property Offered section of the forum to see if there's anything there that you could go for.

http://www.englishforum.ch/property-offered/

But I'm afraid the 2-3 month advance rent for the deposit is the norm here unless they'll take Swiss Caution so you'll have to deal with that.

Did a search on Immostreet.ch and came up with a 33m2 studio in Dianastrasse, 8001 Zurich for 2,000 a month with Zurich Business Apartments.

Have you talked to your HR department about the housing situation? If they set you up with the original place then they may be able to help you find a new one. Or as Amy123 suggests possibly find you a relocation agent, though you may have to pay for that if they don't agree to foot the bill. It will depend on the original moving package they gave you.

Amy, not all companies will provide a relocation agent. When we moved the OH's new firm didn't, but did pay moving costs and the HR helped with finding places to rent, getting registered, etc. It really depends on the firm.

Other websites to check beside the Immostreet one are:

www.immoscout24.ch
www.homegate.ch
www.home.ch

and for private rentals:

www.petitesannonces.ch
www.anibis.ch

One more additional option is to visit COOP, MIGRO and stores like this at the place where you want to live.

You might see advertisements of rental apartments. They are local ... Call them and visit.

Good luck

Try RonOrp (for example http://www.ronorp.net/zurich_en/clas...d-zurich_en.25) or subletting. Otherwise think about changing your priorities. You will have fierce competition with your budget in your chosen Areas so maybe look further afield or increase budget (if possible). Public Transport is fantastic so also look at Rüschlikon, Kilchberg, Thalwil, Adliswil etc. which is all close by to where you work.

Re: British Expat looking for an apartment near Werd, Enge, Bellevue

To be honest they offered me 2 options:
1. 2,000chf
2. A relocation agent

...but I was naive and was not prepared for how difficult it was going to be. I was told everyone spoke English (not landlords aparently) and that I would be able to find a place no problem. Not only is it difficult to find a place you like, it is even more difficult to 'get shortlisted' for an apartment you do like as a Brit with no history in Switzerland.

If this carries on for much longer I may beg to swap the deal and return the cash.

For 2000CHF, you should be able to pay for a relocation agent. The one I used charged 1 month's rent as a fee (probably VAT on top of that). She was great. Like I said - she went and saw all the places before taking me there, picked me up from work / airport to go to appointments, handled my application (was accepted within days), arranged my utilities, etc

PM me if you want her contact details.

Or send a PM to EF member Mrs Doolittle. Not sure if she deals with the Zurich area, but may be able to put you in touch with someone who does.
