Moving to Zurich middle May

Hi,
My name is Barbara, a first timer trailing wife from the Netherlands. We'll be moving to Zurich in the middle of May where hubs will start at Credit Suisse.
Reading on the EF gave us enough insight to dare and take the plunge and with prep in full swing it is still a treasure trove of info.

So, just wanted to shout out and say 'hi!'

Barbara

Welcome! I hope you like it here. Topography's a bit different, but it's less crowded. (My husband's Dutch).

Hi Edot,

Thanks for the message. We're hoping we'll like it too. I'm very curious to find out! Would be a bit sad having gone to all this hectic trouble/planning etc - in 6 weeks from NL to CH - to come to the conclussion it's not for us.

Hi Sbrinz,

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

Oh and bicycle storage is limited here, so maybe just bring one each, the one with 21 gears....

If you come with an open mind, you'll be fine! And it's easy enough to get back to NL for the weekend if you miss stuff.

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

Sbrinz,
we had thought to bring our bikes along. But my father in law and Google maps kind of have us doubting that idea now. We're not keen mountainbikers and would want to use them more as a mode of transport, as we Dutch do.

Maybe you can give us some insider info on the feasabillity of that?

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

Zurich isn't very hilly, especially next to the lake and river. The mountains and hills are distant, I would bring them as exploring is much easier on a bike.

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

Sbrinz is correct about the lake and rivers, but I do think other parts of zurich are quite hilly be Dutch standards. Still, definitely bring your bikes.

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

You might struggle a bit with your three-gear omafiets. They're fine for in the city centre and by the lake, though some of the suburbs are a bit of a climb.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Moving to Zurich middle May

Hey Nick,

A three gear Omafiets, you fancy pants! The original one comes with none at all, in every colour as long as it's black and with a scary reverse peddle brake.
But thanks for the head's up. I won't be trading my current 7-gear one in for that, but instead look for something more along the line of my hubs bike, 27 gears.
