Greetings from Istanbul

Hello everyone!

I am Salih. I live in Istanbul and study Translation and Interpreting Studies at Boğaziçi University here. I was born here, grew up here, almost all my life was spent in this city.

About ten years, my mother has been living in Switzerland. Normally, she would come and visit me in Istanbul. Last summer, we made an exception and I visited her in Switzerland. There I started learning German properly.

After turning back to Istanbul, I continued learning German in an institute. Now I am about to become B2 and I believe I am not so bad at German. On the other hand, I have an feverish passion for Swiss German but I have hard time finding things written or said in Swiss German on the internet.

Some people advised me to learn standard German first. Then it would be much easier for me to learn Swiss German. I do so but I cannot help but try to learn things about the country and the language.

As far as I can see, this forum is the best place on the internet, if you are looking for information about Switzerland and Swiss German. My goal here is to learn new and detailed things about the country and the language.

Besides German, Turkish and English, I am also fairly good at Japanese and I know a little bit Chinese. Towards the end of this year, I am planning to take up French, as well.

My hobbies include doing crossword puzzles, listening to various kinds of music, reading and writing things about fantasy literature, playing the flute and dancing Tango Argentino.

Thanks for your time!

It varies a lot from region to region.

Perhaps studying German and Romansh is a better idea, until you get here?
Once here start buying obscure tools off local farmers, you'll soon learn the Swiss-German dialect!
