Moving to Neuchâtel in August-September!

Hi everyone!

I'm moving to Neuchâtel soon! My wife lives there and my goal is learn English as much as possible and find a job! I'm System Engineer and I'm 33 years old.

For this reason I need to improve my English level, meet new people and include me in the country. It will be difficul for me because I'm a little shy, but I know I can do it with effort and motivation!

Any suggestion is welcome?

I hope a learn a lot from this forum!

Thanks!

Welcome (soon) to Neuchâtel .

You might also want to brush up on your French before you move here too. It will be more useful than English in Neuchâtel.

Re: Moving to Neuchâtel in August-September!

Welcome to Neuchatel. Sadly, Belgianmum is correct. I still only speak English (after 3 years). The schools have recently starting having the kids take English classes. So the question is can I wait long enough for the kids to get older and English will be easier to get by with here, or should I get off my lazy butt and learn French? I think I know the right answer, but its hard!!!

My guess is that the cantons of Neuchatel and Jura probably have the fewest English speakers per capita...but I don't know how to confirm that.

Re: Moving to Neuchâtel in August-September!

Thanks for your replies.

Actually , my level of French in speaking and understanding is better than English.

I known that living in Neuchâtel I'm going to improve my French confidence a lot.(listening every day the people, Tv ,radio and some classes...)

My comment about English is because I need speaking it too for have more opportunities to get a job in my field.

Of course I want to improve my French level! But this is "english forum"

There are English classes through the ecole migros, interlangues, inlingua, or you could see try to set up a tandem with an English speaker looking to practice their Spanish. I feel like here would be a good place to find that, or post on anibis.ch.

Re: Moving to Neuchâtel in August-September!

Hello Omayano,

Welcome to the Neuchatel area !

Last year we had a nice french club going on, held every friday morning in Neuchatel. We gathered once a week to speak french.
If you're looking for a way to improve your french speaking skills and to meet fun and friendly people from all over the world, whom you can share your experience with, that's the place !

I will be posting more soon on the forum about the details and when the first meeting is going to be held this year.

For more info, you can message me.

good luck settling !

Gerri

Hi and welcome. Not a very good time to look for jobs in Neuchâtel unless you have very specific and rare skills to offer. The strong franc and depression of some markets (like China) is making it extremely difficult to export watches, precision engineering, etc- and there is alreay a high unemployment rate here, with the local government putting huge effort into re-training local long-term unemployed. Bonne chance.

Hello and welcome! Why don't you come to our little get-together in a few weeks? You'll be able to meet some English-speakers.
