English teachings in Geneva Public schools

Hi All,
I am new in this forum, I am happy to join a so large community.
I am about to move to Geneva as an Expatriate, with my 2 kids. In my Country they were studying in English, and i wish them to continue their studies in the same Language in public schools. Can this be possible in Geneva?
It is to note that thier fist language is french. Can a public scholl offer entirely the lessons in English Language?

Hello

How old are your kids? Where exactly do you want to move?

I think it is very easy to get a reply from the public school organisation directly. You can just phone them or write them an e-mail.

FYI, link to public schools in Nyon:

Re: English teachings in Geneva Public schools

I'm not up on the schooling side too much, but my understanding is they'll be taught in French with German and/or English being added in later, depending on what ages they are. You will not get lessons taught entirely in English in any public school here, it's not a Swiss language.

There's a debate about the whole teaching of languages in schools here going on at the moment.

Geneva is still a bit vague. Do you mean the city or the canton?

You can look here and contact them:

Re: English teachings in Geneva Public schools

Isn't Geneva city the canton with not much else land-wise?

It depends on what you can afford, what sort of relocation package if any you're going to get, etc.

The 5 year old will only be in kindergarten so there will be no English at that level. The 11 year old maybe, it'll depend on the school's policy.

Otherwise it's either you teach them yourself at home, employ someone to teach them out of school hours or look a whether you can afford to put them into an international school, but that's expensive. Here's the International School of Geneva's fees for this year.

You will have to do some Research on this. There are tons of threads about that. The 5 year old will be fine in a local French school and will pick up the language in no time. The 11 year old, however, might well run into a lot of problems. Not really sure about streaming in the French part of the country but 11 is sure as hell the age for streaming in the German part and language is very important for the streaming decision. This might well be a deal-breaker if you can't source the funding for international schooling for the 11 year old. At least it would be for me!

Don't panic, it's Geneva! Your children will hear just as much English as French in their everyday life!

There is also a strong possibility that they'll befriend an Anglo-Saxon in their school, a couple of reciprocated invites...and Bob's your uncle!

The OP said that their mother tongue is French so I don't think the language will be a big issue for them although they may need extra tuition in German if they haven't had German before as that figures quite highly in the streaming process.

Overall I don't think either kids will have any problems within the French speaking public school system in Geneva. They could always look for after school activities in English which I'm pretty sure exist in Geneva.

Welcome along. We relocated to Geneva in 2011 and our children go to public school. They are now in year 3 (6 year old) and year 8 (12 year old). Lessons are taught in French.

There are no native english speakers in my youngest daughter's class and one in my eldest. I'm glad of this as my eldest used to gravitate towards english speakers if she could.

For the first 12 months, our oldest, who was 8 when we relocated, spent half of each day having intensive french lessons at one school before returning to her class after lunch at another school.

Her regular school lessons have included German since we arrived.

She was enrolled in the homework surveillance program at school once per week. We supplement this with two tutors a week, a mature professor to nudge her maths and spoken french in the right direction and a young woman who focuses on her french reading and writing.

Since Geneva added school on Wednesday mornings (last year?), her year is also having English as a lesson subject.

Our youngest went to kindergarten and at her age has not needed to be separated to receive intensive french lessons.
