Newly arrived to Basel

I've been reading/lurking on englishforum.ch for the last few months as we (wife and 20-month-old) were preparing for our big move from NJ to Basel. So far the forum has been a huge help. Now that we've landed (yesterday) I figure it's time to post something. So, Hello Basel! (And early happy 4th to fellow U.S. expats).

We're working our way through the mandatory list of new arrival stuff (registration, bank accounts, phones, etc.) but any advice for someone fresh* off the plane would be welcomed.

(*as fresh a possible for someone traveling with a small child)

Indeed - welcome. You'll find this place grows on you if you keep and open mind and don't compare everything to the US.

You might need to research the banking - some banks don't want US citizens because of FATCA but I'm sure the very helpful community here will give you some tips.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to Basel.

Sorry about the weather. It's not normally so cool in Summer. It's been like this since February.

Hello and welcome. My wife and I are both Americans and we have a 8-month-old. We have lived here for about 3.5 years. I work in Basel. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Newly arrived to Basel

Hi

We arrived in March (from the UK) with a 15 month old, so I empathise utterly. Our plane journey wasn't so long though, obviously.

I hope you're settling in and keeping cool.

Best wishes

Thanks. It helps that every little park seems to have a children's pool! I think I've finally learned not to leave the house without the toddler's swimsuit. It's hard to stop her when she decides she's going in the water, and more than once it's been with her clothes on.

We also visited the natural pool in Riehen (http://www.naturbadriehen.ch/) this weekend. It was really nice. Almost prefer it to the pool at St. Jacob.

Now if only ice cream weren't so expensive. :-/

Re: Newly arrived to Basel

We were told about the Riehen pool the other day - I looked it up online, looks fab. We're easing our little one in gradually regarding the water situation. She's just easing out of a stage of refusing to sit down in the bath so we don't want to push our luck! We've had some recent success with a comically (and unexpectedly) large Winnie-the-Pooh paddling pool in our back garden, however. Unexpected because the box was very small...

Have you been to the Zoo with your little one? The Ape House, Aquarium and some other areas - with the crocodiles - are very much under cover and lovely and cool. I don't think the ice-cream is too bad there either! Plus it's open on a Sunday and has a rather decent restaurant.
