Moving from Tessin to Geneva

Hello, I'm Isabelle! I am currently living in the Tessin Canton and would like to move to Geneva on a permanent basis. I have a valid B permit and I'm Mother tongue English/Italian and speak very good French.
While running through the job and house rentals ads, it came across to me that it would be basically impossible to find a job in Geneva unless you are already settled there. Problem is many landlords ask to see your salary before allowing you to settle in, therefore what is one supposed to do if you are moving in order to find a job? I could show them my current salary, but it would be ridiculous knowing that salaries in Tessin are dramatically lower than the rest of Switzerland, although I am financially independent and I will be able to afford my rent and living if a job doesn't come along immediately.
I was just wondering if anyone has encountered the same issue?

Moreover, what would you do:
1) Go to Geneva for a few days and introduce yourself to recruitment agencies?
or
2) Send your CV by email and await feedback, knowing that you will not be able to attend interviews if needed from one day to the other?

If someone could give me their opinion on this, I would be really greatful..
Many thanks,

Hi.
Can't you transfer with your company?
Did you already quit your job?
What's the reason for the move?
Geneve will be more expensive than Ticino.

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

Hi Isabelle
If you have an Italian passport, you automatically have the right to live in France. So why not find accommodation [it is so very much easier] on the border with CH, say in Annemasse, Viry, so that you can commute into Geneva on a daily basis?
As we live in Evian, I am not certain how this might affect your B Permit but hopefully the above will provide you with a solution. Good luck

you change it for the G permit when you get your job, the B permit you have to give it back.

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

Unfortunately the reason why I would like to move is that I am separating from my husband who happens to also be my boss. I still have my job and until I don't find a new one, I will never quit. No, the company cannot and will not move.
I know that Geneve will be more expensive, but also the wages and opportunities are higher. Ticino doesn't offer much and I am not fluent in German. There is no way I could still live in Switzerland and pay a rent with the wages they have here. Thanks for your support

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

Hi... No, for no reason I will trade in my B permit. My mother is French so I have French ID as well and a double British/Italian passport.
I believe that Switzerland has many opportunities and that it some way I will emerge from this crazy situation. I know that life would be expensive, but again I want to remain on Swiss sole with all the advantages that this country can offer. I respect and believe in this country and its government..

Depending on your job skype interviews could be possible. But if your husband is the boss why don't you ask him for a day off when you have interviews?
I would not move to france if you have a b permit. If you can't pay the apartment social assistance can help i guess...

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

Thanks! Yes, it makes sense. I have the intention to go for a few days now in July to Geneve just to get a feel of the town and leave my CVs to the agencies. Then, obviously, start looking and eventually take some days off.

Not only do they manage to live, eat, pay the bills and pay a ridiculously high rent, they also manage to save enough money each month to save up for a deposit on a house, to be able stop paying the ridiculously high rent as soon as possible!

The challenges are the same everywhere you go I suppose, I'm in the exact situation here. I am just looking for support as I do not have a clue where I am heading. My words were not to offend anyone and apologies if the message didn't come across as it should have. Have a nice Sunday!

Same to you.

What in particular attracts you to Geneva/Romandie?

I was in Ticino years ago, I guess in a similar situation, I was working there, I already spoke French, Italian and English like you, but for this reason amongst others I moved to Deutschschweiz to 'complete the set'. Nothing was keeping me in Ticino at the time, on the contrary! I now do miss Ticino though, but I'm not sure I would move back.

I've visited Geneva, but on the whole Romandie is foreign to me, I haven't ever thought about working there.

If you moved to Zurich, your German would improve.

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

I think my job opportunities would be higher and the scenario in Geneva seems positive as my German is very poor and I need to be focused on finding an occupation before thinking about anything else. I guess that being in a Romand area would be a little less traumatic than having to go to Zurich or Bern and not being able to comunicate. These are just my thoughts obviously, maybe I'm wrong..

I actually would do both. Send your CV, mentionning you'll be in Geneva in July and that you'll take the opportunity to meet them.

To say it in simple terms, compared with Lugano, Geneva is a kind of small New York. And while Lugano HAS a lake, the Lake of Geneva just as the Lake of Konstanz (Bodensee) is in a league of its own

Re: Moving from Tessin to Geneva

I'd advise not to restrict yourself to just Geneva. With an admin/sales background you should be able to find a job anywhere in the western part of Switzerland so also look at Lausanne, Sion, Martigny, Neuchatel, Bulle, Fribourg, etc. Costs will be lower in Neuchatel and Fribourg/Bulle - don't know about the others, but they should still be cheaper than Geneva. Even if you want to find a job in Geneva, living in Vaud will be cheaper in some areas and easier to find accommodation.
