Schools in Vevey

Nice to virtually meet you all. I am looking for feedback on the various school options in Vevey for a ten year old and twelve year old. Best private schools? Best public schools? We are American and they have both been in private schools here (first Montessori and now traditional prep). Thank you in advance.

Re: Schools in Vevey

You should certainly check some of the previous threads on Schools. Compared to the US, I think you'll find that public schools are more uniform and probably pretty decent compared to the overall US average. You'll find that private schools tend to be expensive, and I may be understating that point.

A local school will force your kids to learn French well and otherwise integrate. It might also slow them down a bit until they do. (Assuming they aren't already fluent.) Many private schools are primarily taught in English. Some companies will pay for private school when asking a family to relocate, especially on a temporary basis. So the duration and terms of your relocation also factor into the decision.

Re: Schools in Vevey

Thank you for your quick reply. I have read many of the threads on the schools but most are at least a year old or even older and was hoping for current feedback.

We will have full tuition reimbursement so the cost is not a deciding factor for us.

We are at least a year from having to move so we have plenty of time to visit. The choice of school will dictate where we live, etc. so it is the first place for us to start.

The children have taken French lessons and spent time in France but are not fluent. We think one of the advantages of the public schools will be that they are forced to become fluent.

Thanks again

Re: Schools in Vevey

Local Swiss schools will not be ideal for your children based upon their ages. A quick search of EF threads yields many that detail the difficulties surrounding enrolling tweens in local school, primarily due to language acquisition issues that will likely delay their academic progress at this critical juncture, along with the streaming that will have already taken place for students who are the age of your older child and which is on the horizon for students the age of your younger child.

Further, if your stay in Switzerland is for a short length of time and you intend to return to the US (and your children to US schools) in the next few years, you will should enroll them in an international school. As the tuition will be covered, your most difficult step will be finding the time to schedule visits and any existing wait lists.

If you are staying in Switzerland for the long-haul, local school may be a viable option, but you should consider where your children intend to attend university; it will be a more seamless admissions process for your children to stay on an AP or IB track (in an international school) if they wish to attend a US university.

Do get started soon on your research and visits!

Re: Schools in Vevey

Hey there,

Welcome the EF and soon enough to CH.

I was in the same boat 1.5 years ago. Vevey (st legier technically ) has a decent international school option as does Lausanne. But, one year out is the ideal time to start discussing with both schools as there are waiting lists and 12 months is the best time to start.

We live in Vevey and choose an international school in the Vevey area after visiting the two.

Pm me and il be more than happy to to give you my detailed thoughts as well as give you the admissions coordinator contact details.

Cheers and a bien tot
