Looking for new friends in St.Moritz

Hi all, I moved here in early August with my husband. I don't work at the moment, while focus on adapting to new life and learning German.
I'm looking for some friends to do sport, hang out over coffee or shopping.
More about me, I'm an Asian girl who spent last few years in Bangkok and Singapore.

Inbox me :P

Re: Looking for new friends in St.Moritz

Hi I'll be moving there next week. I have no idea what to expect and would love to know your experience. I'm 25 y/o marrying a swiss and I'm from US but I studied in the Philippines for college. I'll be posted in Kolbrun, Winterthur-Zurich.

Re: Looking for new friends in St.Moritz

Hi Krystel,

Welcome to Switzerland!
I am only here for 12 days now. Im still super new. However, I will share my thought for the time being. I really hope it helps.
St. Moritz - where I live, is a small town of only about 5000 people. So I was abit bored at first (I came out from BKK and Singapore - both bigger cities with more thing to do). However, thing gets better as I start to appreciate the beauty of nature here. Beautiful mountain and lake, fresh air (they are so proud to call it "champagne air" here). I do alot of walking and biking everyday. People in this town start to remember my face (not too hard though. cuz I think Im the only asian here ). Thing becomes smooth.
I will start my intensive German class in Chur (2 hours train from St.Moritz) from next Monday. Monday to Friday, 8:30-11:45. So my schedule is pretty much occupied on weekday.
St.Moritz is a very famous destination for skiing. So, I am very looking forward to the first snow.
Unfortunately, Winterthur is abit far from St.Moritz. I also dont know much about lifestyle there. However, I believe if you are open enough and appreciate the nature, Switzerland will not disappointed you.
Good luck with new life and hope to see you in St.Moritz soon

Re: Looking for new friends in St.Moritz

Aw! We just missed each other then. Thank you for replying so quickly though even if I found this a little late But 12 days? Where will you go then? I was a bit nervous and unsure about going to Switzerland. I've read a lot of stories about the coldness that Swiss people can give but I've also read a lot of good things.. so I wasn't sure what to expect. Your comment made it sound nice though I can't wait to smell that champagne air! Since living in Philippines, I've basically been jogging through a lot of pollution or dangerous sun.

How was the language for you? Were you able to pick up pretty well?

Re: Looking for new friends in St.Moritz

Hey, I think I confused you a little. Sorry for that.
I will be here for good. Yesterday was the 12th day since I got here.
I got to agree that Swiss are not the friendliest people. However, they are very efficient and will sincerely try to help you out (without expecting anything in return) if you ask for it. These traits actually suit me well.
I never been to the Philipines. But I think, BKK's air is not any better than Philipines. I am sure you will appreciate the champagne air here as much as I do.
Hesitation is inevitable. I am pretty much related to you on this one. I was a well established professional back in Asia. I had a decent career with so much potential to excel in a very interesting field (Yield Management). But I chose to be here. And I hope, it's worth it.

I completed A1 Deutsch with Goethe Institute in BKK prior arriving here. Very basic German. I can ask very basic question. But I found its hard to understand what people reply to me. Ability to speak and ability to understand are two different things. My husband is not Swiss. His German is not super. But we try to do German speaking day (once a week) to help each other. You can do the same with your husband.
As mentioned in previous post, I will start my course again next week. So I really hope I will pick up the language faster. My husband also found a private tutor to help me with conversation as well. Since, they speak Swiss German here, while I learn High German at school.

Cheer!
