New to Allschwil

Hello everyone,

My wife and I have recently moved to Allschwil just outside Basel Stadt. Its been a rocky road and we are still trying to get ourselves settled. We both grew up in East Africa and then moved to Cyprus then UK.
We hope this is our last move, it seems to be one the toughest. Our German language skills are very basic and this is not helping. We are glad to be here though and hope to enjoy more of the country once we both secure employment.
Looking forward to making new friends, this forum has been very helpful thanks to all the participants.

Welcome to the forum and to Switzerland. But why move here from the UK? You're going to struggle to find work if you don't speak German to a good level.

Thank you for the Welcome, much appreciated. A very good question, I guess we will give it our best shot and if it doesn't work out, we shall find somewhere else to go.

My language skills are also very basic, and we are moving here in September, but I plan total immersion in the language and to study Rosetta Stone classes at night to improve my communication skills. It will be tough, but I find learning a new language and immersion into its language very possible, even if we've our German is very limited. Best of luck to you learning German.

Re: New to Allschwil

Hello Kristinjoy thank you for your post. It is tough learning a new language, I have tried a number of language learning tools at the moment I am using Pimsleur and Mermrise. Memrise is wonderful and free the app is very good. I shall be doing a course in Basel with K5 too so its going to be quite interesting.
In the meantime I wish you all the best in your move and in learning German.
