Freshly arrived in Basel

Good evening all!

Hope everyone is keeping well tonight and I'd like to introduce myself

I arrived in Basel last Friday with 2 suitcases and I think that's when it really dawned on me that I now have a job here. And that means a life. It's still very strange, but I'm also very excited!

I'm 26 and from Eindhoven (the Netherlands) where I worked for the same company as I'm working at now only... well, back home. But I've always loved to travel so when asked if I was interested in a position in Basel, well who was I to say no?

Now here I am, sitting in my new flat and while I'm excited to go explore Basel and Switzerland, I'd also love to meet people!

So if someone's from Basel and would like to go for a drink sometime, let me know!

I think that's enough rambling from me, I'll stop myself before this becomes horrendously long...

Re: Freshly arrived in Basel

Welcome to the Forum Laura, glad you have found the necessities. Looking at the social programme, there isn't much happening in Basel, maybe you can change that?

There used to be a very good curry night every month in Basel, but it seems to have stopped. So come on Baselers, get out there and meet someone tonight!

Thanks both! Also for the tips.

I'll defenitely have a look around and might plan an activity if I can find someone that knows more places than just my grocery store and my office.

Welcome Laura!

Like I am reading my own story, except I arrived a week before you...

get yourself a half-fare pass and start exploring nature

Like the city so far but someone to grab a coffee with would be nice...

Haha, well I'm Dutch so my hands are itching to get bikehandles in them! I've a good one back in the Netherlands which I'll be moving once I also move my furnuture, any chance that protip includes a place where I can get my itchy hands on a cheap bike?

Haha, well look at that! Hope you've had a good 2 weeks there, then and thanks for the tip!

And if you're in need of a coffee-partner in-crime, I'll happily propose myself. Can't send any private messages anymore (apparently I can only send 4 every 24 hours??) but you have one coming when I can

Re: Freshly arrived in Basel

Laura, I have a good friend your age who has just recently returned to Basel from a 3 year work placement in NL. She is originally from Switzerland but lived all over the world. She is a great coffee buddy and all around amazing person. If you like, send me your Skype or phone number and I will forward them to her.

Re: Freshly arrived in Basel

Hey Laura, if you want to meet up with other Dutch people, there is a monthly meet up in Mühlau (check Nederlanders in Zwitserland on FB).

And welcome from another Dutchie

If you use Facebook, consider checking out the groups Basel Folk and Basel Flouncers.

Re: Freshly arrived in Basel

Not sure if you will see this on time, but there will be a young professionals meet-up in Basel later this week (MeetUp)

Another option you might want to consider is visiting international clubs in Basel, like Toastmasters or the Professional Women's Club. I used to be a member of Toastmasters in Zurich and have fond memories from that time.

Also, a friend told me about Centerpoint.. might want to have a look.

I lived in Basel only for one month, it's a nice city but honestly a little bit quite...probably better in summer!

Enjoy
