I just don't get why a thread obviously aimed at people who have drinking problems (or good advice, experiences or input in that area) get invaded by people who don't. 90% of all people can drink in moderation, you're not adding anything new or remotely interesting here.

Sorry for being grumpy, haven't had me coffee yet.
Trust me, sometimes it is a problem like with anything else. Even coffee can be abused so please be careful

Being soft, accepting, understanding is wrong as by doing it you agree to spend the rest of your life in alcoholic relationship. Why would you? Why anyone should do it? I believe I deserve better. There are women who choose to stay in abusive relationships but it is hell on earth.
.
Absolutely, they're doing this out of a misguided sense of duty.

Re: Would like to talk to others who don't drink anymore

Dog,

As adrianlondon says, we're all addicts in one way or another. Some people are addicted to alcohol. Others are addicted to chocolate. Others to their own emotions (well, we all are, IMO).

When you drink all that alcohol, it's not only changing your mental state, but your physical state as well. All the carbs in the beer or mixed drinks may be something you're body has grown accustomed to. So instead of reaching for a cold beer, reach for a cold glass of carrot juice, for example. Substitute out all the negative crap in your life with things that make you feel good about yourself.

I'd say good luck to you, but luck has nothing to do with it...

Carrot juice?

I'd go for chinotto and soda, fizzy water with a squirt of lime, elderflower cordial and tonic.

Carrot juice would send anyone back onto the gin.

There is absolutely no group therapy available in Switzerland for English speaking people. I wonder why?
You wonder why? Seriously?

I'm sure it will come, just after the entirety of Swiss bureaucracy from driving tests to registering part-ownership of a cow is mandated to be available in English too.

To be fair on the OP, there are English speaking banks, doctors, psychologists, tax consultants, dentists, travel agents, clubs, churches and party organisers. It isn't an unreasonable stretch to imagine that there might be English speaking support groups too.

maybe you've never had fresh carrot juice? it'll leave you feeling way better than your alternatives, and tastes better, too. But to each his own…

edit: fizzy water with lime provides almost no calories. My point was that a good part of the op's addiction may just be to the simple carbs he's used to...

We all have neural connections permanently changed in our brains each time we do something;...
So if we do something else, our brains can get changed back. So it's not permanent.

And of course there are: AA, Al-Anon, some cancer support groups etc. If there isn't one that meets your need, why not start one - that's really how all the others will have begun.

By "permanently changed" I mean it's not something temporary that fades away. Sure, you can change it again to something else and in that sense the first change wasn't permanent.

If you get a white sheet of paper and use a permanent marker to put a yellow line on it, the yellow is permanent. You can still paint over the paper with black paint, or tippex, or burn the whole thing. Does't stop the yellow line from being referred to as permanent. Semantics.

Providing you had one to start with.......... and i have my doubts sometimes that "one size fits all" actually applies here reading some of the posts & questions asked.

Yeah yeah, but, right, and this is my point, come the heat death of the universe, it'll be gone. Nothing is permanent. Even nothingness might not be.

Don't know about giving up all substances, alcohol, for me, is the hardest to give up, even though it's done the most to ruin my life.

Acid would take me places i'd never been, speed almost killed me, coke makes me talk shit, dope is my favourite but makes me paranoid, but only because people think the worst of it.

Alcohol is the most accepted drug of our time, but it turns me into an arsehole, i've never regretted more the things i've done drunk than maybe almost accidentally killing myself high on speed.

Alcohol is universally accepted here in the west, people who avoid it are totally boring, there will be people in this thread who will react to that comment and prove it true. That is what will make it the hardest to give up.

I'm not sure we as humans can exist without letting go sometimes, I think sometimes, you just have to get out of your own head, but learn that moderation isn't such a bad thing. Abstinence, however, is pretty much laughed at except for nuns and monks.
This is probably the most honest comment I've read in a while.

Highlighted above, sometimes it has the same effect on me 0-arsehole in 5 drinks. Then again I've been described as a funny drunk and to be honest I like being pissed with a group of like minded people now and again. Then again it's Russian roulette which one you will get.

I don't drink that much these days, in fact virtually nothing at all not through choice, but I just don't feel the need to.

Drugs I haven't touched in years probably about 15 now in total. University got that out of my system I just grew out of it.

Smoking is a constant on/off and caffeine is impossible to get rid of out my life.

I agree coke makes you talk shit and for me makes me aggressive along with many others. Speed was okay with me, but the comedowns are terrible. LSD/Mushrooms never worked for me.

The only drug I truly loved was MDMA. Who can not love something that makes you dance like a moron till 8am and hug random people?

I respect others choice to abstain and those who realise they have a problem and take action to address it. It cannot be easy and I feel for them.

Saying all that I'm out this evening in ZH we'll see how this turns out.

This makes it really hard to work out the percentage of shit.
That's exactly how it is. Let's smash her because she dared to come back so why not throwing some more shit, who cares? She deserves it right? And we love to bath in our own sauce. Ohh she burns so brightly...what a fun!

Seems like you are one of very few people here who don't overuse forum status or take sides. Somehow you manage to have fun without posting anything mean and offensive...and people love you. They should learn from you.

You went back several pages to go back to a comment which wasn't even about you anyway to make this rather bizarre, off-topic response?

Are you feeling ok?

Um, different friends maybe? I don't drink alcohol, mix with plenty of people who do, and have never been laughed at for it.

edit: I see NotAllThere beat me to it!
Why is it laughed at? If someone decides to stop drinking then this person probably has very good reason to do so, oder?
