Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

I was wondering if there was any dentist here. I just got my "license" to practice in Switzerland and getting to know someone who can give me some advice would be great!

Isn't Granada in Spain?

First mate Blackbeard may be along - although he's probably a bit older and experienced, now.

Exactly, Granada in Spain.
No, now in Switzerland unfortunatelly. The country is very expensive for a spaniard and I have a family...
That guy, Blackbeard, is he a member on this forum?

I didn't want to act on his behalf and felt that he would contribute if and as he wished - hence the disguising of his username.

Re: Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

I think you need to change your location in your profile .

If you're in fact in Spain, how is info about Swiss dentists/dentists resident in Switzerland so relevant for you that you register on a Swiss forum aimed at English-speaking people who live in CH?

Re: Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

Ok guys, here I am.

rc10, welcome to Switzerland and the EF, where you sometimes can find bits of useful info if you are patient and thick-skinned enough.

I assume that you are looking for a job as a dentist, say at an existing practice, right?

Trouble is, I'm an old fart indeed, founded my practice 38 years ago, officially reached retirement age almost three years ago, still not really retired, though, just adding a few more weeks to my stays in the USA every year.

In other words, the last time I had to deal with the problems you are facing was around the mid 'seventies, when things were totally different, and for me they were even more different in that I grew up in Switzerland as a Swiss citizen and graduated from a Swiss university.

Maybe this document can provide some advice and useful addresses.

Unfortunately, the Website of the Swiss Dental Association is not available in English, but it is available in French and Italian. There you'll find some more addresses on the Contacts page, in particular the employment agency of the association.

Please feel free to get back to me, but you must know that I'm not one of those EFers that spend their entire life on this forum, so once in while my response may be a bit slow.

Take care,

Captain Greybeard
(just call me Captain....)

Re: Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

Hi rc10
You could write to jobs@sso.ch to put your name on the list of dentists looking for jobs and to receive the list of dental practices looking for assistant dentists. There is a small fee, but it is well worth the price.

You'll need to list the following:
1. Name
2. Place and name of your dental university
3. Date of graduation/ number of years of experience
4. Languages spoken.
5. Email and or contact phone number
6. Date of availability/ percentage of desired employment.
7. Region of desired employment ( Kantons or languages)
8. A short description of yourself and your specialities in dentistry. ( one or two sentences)

I would suggest you concentrate on the region with a known language, though you can ask for a list from all of Switzerland, if you like. You may have more chances, if you only speak Spanish and English, in a tourist area.

Hope this helps.
Saludos.

Re: Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

Captain, Susan, thank you, you are very helpful.

My main concern is that it seems that just certain dental clinics hire non-swiss dentists. It seems that these chains of clinics are all the times hiring new dentists, which make me think that the reason of being all the time hiring dentists, hygienist, dental nurses..is that professionals here may have a precarious job...And I am a serious and professional dentist looking for an stable job in a good place. And when I say "good place", I don`t mean loads of CHF coming every month to my bank account but working in a nice place, with a good team, with a good dental technician, with good composites, with Hu Friedy, with good aparatology and materials that let me show to my patients and myself what I'am capable of,in a good ambient, and with an employer who treats me right..Not sure I can find this in these swiss "dental chains"..

I recommend staying away from Swiss smiles. I had nothing but bad experiences there. Double billing, trouble getting a second opinion, frequent cancellations. If the chain has these problems, the dentists are likely not happy. That being said, it might be a good stepping stone for anyone trying to get contacts.

I completely understand your concern, however it may not be as easy as you might expect. Just as an English speaking dentist might find it challenging to enter into top Spanish practices, it is the same in Switzerland. Unless you come with a recognizable educational background or speciaity, I am sorry to say it won't be easy. At least, the German dentists will have an advantage over you in the German part of Switzerland.

You are actually lucky to be part of the EU, which gives you a chance to work in Switzerland. I knew two excellent dentists, a Brazilian periodontist and New Zealander dentist, who were completely denied. The Brazilian had actually re-tested and qualified in New York before coming to Zurich and was still denied. She was very disappointed.

I don't think you'll be allowed to work alone, so you'll need to either join a small practice as an assistant dentist, or a group/chain office. There are pros and cons to both. I would not recommend Swiss Smile, but I have had good experiences with www.zahnarztzentrum.ch . It was started by a Swedish female dental surgeon, Dr. Sara Hurrlimann. They do advertise a lot, as they have many practices throughout Switzerland, thus many jobs available. You'll most likely work on a commission, receiving a percentage of your production.

If you prefer a small private practice, you'll need to find a practice where your languages are an asset. You'll probably be paid a fixed salary, and you won't be getting complicated cases. At least in the beginning.

In all cases, the job search shall require patience and luck. I wish you both.

Suerte.

Re: Hi..Any dentist in the forum?

In all cases, get "the list" from SSO ( Swiss Dental Association). This is your best starting point. :-)

Grrr. No wonder there are so many allegations of unnecessary dental work.

Actually, it is the modern way of avoiding fixed costs for dental offices with multiple dentists and hygienists. Instead of paying salaries, they often receive a percentage of the production.

Although I completely understand your frustration and suspicion, this does not equate to non-ethical behavior. For example, my lifetine goal and personal ethic is to help patients save their teeth and save their money. I am committed to this concept, which means stressing preventive care over treatment.

Trust me, it works.

It does not equate it, but it can promote it. I fired two young dentists who talked their patients into accepting stuff that was not necessary at all, let alone wanted by the patients. I appreciate your ethical stance, which I entirely share, but greed, albeit not a requirement for a career as a dentist, can never be excluded.
