Hello all!

I'm currently living in the UK, but hoping to move to Switzerland in the coming years. The main motivation for me moving is an increased median salary for my field, (which I presume applies to most fields). I do of course admire the country (based on my limited knowledge).

I signed up to this forum to hopefully gather some more information so that I can make more specific decisions, begin preparations, and hopefully make some friends along the way.

The main things I am interested to learn more about are visas/gaining long-term residency (particularly with regard to potential outcomes of upcoming re-negotiations of freedom of movement for both my country and Switzerland), location (to move to), and the associated language (it seems to be around 60% German/Swiss-German, so that seems most likely for me).

Thank you for reading!

Re: Hello all!

Welcome to the forum. There's plenty of info in the various sticky threads of the forum so have a look there. Also get hold of a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info. You can order it from your local bookshop or via the Internet.

As for where to move to, that will depend on your skills/experience.

As for permits, at the moment EU nationals have the right to live/work here without restrictions so it's simply a matter of moving, finding a job and getting a permit. What will happen if/when the new law to curb immigration from the EU comes into force no one knows yet.

Re: Hello all!

Hello and welcome.

Don't forget that the increased median salary of which you speak comes with massively increased costs of swiss living. There are many insurance type things you have to have by law here which are optional in the UK. And the price of even the basics is at least 1/3 more than in the UK. As Medea says, there are many threads on here that will explain. Expect about 40% of your salary to disappear before you get your hands on it!

Don't be surprised if you are not better off despite the salary hike.

However, i would recommend Switzerland highly for the awesome public transport and clean streets. And this nice forum.

Regards

Ian
