Moved from Colorado to Saillon, VS - working as an au pair and looking for friends!

Hello everyone! My name is Kymberli and I've lived in Saillon since the end of August working as an au pair for a very kind family. I like Switzerland - it's beautiful and the mountains remind me of home - but I don't really know anyone besides my host family and though the kiddos are sweet I would love to get to know some 'grownups' preferably around my age (20 something year olds).

Hej
Look for friends in Le Chable/ Verbier
Lots of international au pairs for the season

A facebook group called verbier mums, could help you to get in contact.

That's a good idea, thank you!

I haven't had a chance yet to check out the thermal baths, but it's on my list.

Found any friends yet? Where abouts are you from in CO? Are you a skier or snowboarder- maybe you could join the lcoal ski club to meet locals- the resorts above Sion on both sides are just amazing!

Hey! I'm from Colorado too. Unfortunately I am on the way opposite side of the country as you, but welcome to Switzerland.

Lots of foreigners in their 20s work in ski resorts such as Verbier during the winter season (and leave afterward).

Another option is to attend a language course.
You can also consider joining a sports club, a band or a knitting club

If she's here as an au pair she has to be taking a language course. It's part of the requirement to be employed as an au pair.

Thanks for the welcome
I'm from the Western Slope of CO - lived in Montrose, went to school in Gunnison, if anyone knows Colorado. If not, then I'm 'an hour to anywhere' as we like to say and nowhere close to Denver!
I actually haven't been skiing since I was 10 (way too pricey in CO, I assume the same in the valley?), but I do like snowshoeing, hiking, and the likes.
Yes, au pairs must take a language class here but I'm the only au pair (and only foreigner and only English speaker) in mine.

A knitting club or book club or something is a good idea - could anyone guide me in the right direction as to where to find something like that?

Zuki, what part of Colorado are you from?

Re: Moved from Colorado to Saillon, VS - working as an au pair and looking for friend

Some years back, we drove from Sedona AZ to Winterpark, via Montrose, Gunnison and Mount Elbert- such beautifu scenery (via Arches, Canyo de Cheilly, Mesa Verde, Durango - amazing).

Lost of smaller ski resorts above Saillon/Sion, like Haute Nendaz, Thyon 2000, Veysonnaz, Nax, Evolène and Arolla, and more- so hopefully you'll get a chance to visit. Have fun.

I'm from Fort Collins. Never managed to make it to Gunnison, but I've driven through Montrose before.

If you ever make it to the SG side of Switzerland let me know. Would be fun to meet up!

Re: Moved from Colorado to Saillon, VS - working as an au pair and looking for friend

Hi
You've choosen one of the "colder" places in Switzerland. The habitants there are not living in an open way and are afraid from "unknown". When you want to know swiss people, you have to "study" thei're way of life: means party with them and learn thei're native language. When they took confidence with you, they will show you theyr way of life.
I don't know, how the life is going on at your mountains, but in switzerland swiss mountain people are like their neighbours: hard and cold at the outside but with a treasure in the inside.
When you'd like to meet some kind of "modern" people, you will have to go to a town (like everywhere on the world).
In the mountains you will find some kind of "family" life, including everything: if you are member you have automatically enemys
Enjoy you're stay :x
