Hello, Want to Meet for Coffee?

Hi,

It's nice to meet you all.

I've been in Bern for a couple of weeks, visiting my girlfriend. This is my third time coming to Switzerland.

I'm a dual-citizen, American/Canadian, and I have been thinking about trying to immigrate here late next year. I've read the other forum about Immigrating/Permits/Visas etc. and my conclusion is that it is pretty difficult to relocate.

I was wondering if any American or Canadian expats in Bern would mind meeting me for a coffee sometime. I'm here until January 6th.

I think talking with a real person about their experiences would be helpful for me. As I've said, I have read through the forums (lots of good information), but I find it a little overwhelming and hard to put into a cohesive form that I really understand.

I would be more than happy to take someone out for a coffee and a pastry if anyone is interested. If you are interested, could you send me a PM?

Thanks.

Welcome and Merry Christmas.

With such a post always a good idea to put location in the title - especially as your EF location says USA.

Hello.

You really only have two options.

1 - Get a job, the employer has to prove they can't find someone in the EU to do it... so you have to have skills.

2 - Marry your girlfriend, and come as her dependant.

1 is likely to be out as you're a student, but you could possibly look at doing a Masters course here in Switzerland. Most are taught in English. Otherwise as a student you pretty much have no chance because only non-EU nationals with a university degree and several years of experience tend to be considered. The criteria of the hiring of non-EU nationals is outlined here:
