I spent six months learning German before I went to Austria. Both here in Switzerland and when I was in Austria all my work is in English and my friends and Colleagues all speak English (and like to practice it). So my German is still really, really embarrassingly bad.
1. But, every month I am surprised at how much better it is, and the things I manage to achieve in English.
2. I survive fine here. Sometimes it is very difficult. But the better my German gets the easier it is. But it does not make things impossible (even if it feels like it occasionally).

http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ is your friend. The translations are very rough, but give you the general idea. If you are still unsure, get a German speaking person to help. Don't use Babelfish too much help you learn German or English. The translations can be very bad most of the time. But close enough to understand.
