Moving to Bern in August

Hi,

I introduced myself a few weeks ago but haven't been active on the forum. My husband and I will be living in Bern mid-August through December. He'll be with the university. I've been trying to figure out where to live. I've made contact with someone who has a place to rent in Hinterkappelen. My concern is whether it's too far away from the city. I realize that public transportation is very convenient. My question is really whether it would be socially isolating to be located outside of the city itself. I'd prefer to be closer to the center of activities. Does anyone have views about this?

I very much appreciate the website links to apartment rental agencies. I have to admit, though, that I find it hard to really assess them since I don't really know anything about what I should expect in Bern.

Re: Moving to Bern in August

Hi

Welcome to the forum and shortly, to Bern!

Just to answer your question about Hinerkappeln - it is not that far out of the main city but not very convenient if you will be relying on public transport alone. There are about 3 buses an hour but this dwindles down to one sometime after 10 pm.
For a short stay, it would probably be better to find a place in town. As you will be connected with the university, there should be accomodation available through the university contact board. It would also be better for your social life. However you can also look at www.anzeiger.ch or www.immoscout24.ch where for rent accomodation is listed. The sites are in German so if you will probably need help navigating these if you don't speak German.
If you have any questions about Bern, feel free to ask,

Greetings

Starbug

There should be plenty of places in and around Bern to live.

I would definitely live in the city. It is beautiful, and it has
a nice feel.

Thank you, Starbug. You've confirmed what I thought would be true about living in Bern proper being preferable. Thanks for the links as well. I appreciate them.

Thanks for the encouragement. We're very much looking forward to being there. Just for now all the effort required to *get* ourselves there seems to be overshadowing the good part!
