Looking for friends and info... Swiss Canadian moving from Canada to Switzerland.

Hello everyone my names Dave. I recently just got my swiss citizenship because my father is from Switzerland. I am planning on moving to a French part of Switzerland, In early 2009. I am a 23 year old guy from Canada who's looking to meet some people in Switzerland and live there for a few years.

A few questions I am currently a plumber apprentice would anyone have any information on apprentice programs or how likely it would be for a English only speaking swiss citizen to get work in trades? Is there very much or any construction going on right now over there? And does anyone know what the average Journeyman wage is in Switzerland because I know in Canada its $30-$40 per hour.

I know Switzerland is an expensive city but are there any areas that are less expensive, specifically in a French speaking area? Right now my plan is on moving to Lausanne. Aside from language is there much difference between the French and German areas? In Canada there is more use for French than German so I would like to learn French because it would be more beneficial. I cant speak French very well but I am trying to learn will I be able to get around atleast a bit with just English? If I am a citizen can I just go and work or do I need to get a social insurance card or something like that?

Whats the deal with the Army there will I have to join because isn't there conscription? I have done a tour or duty with the Canadian Army so will they exempt me or will I still have to join? Further more would I be able to join only able to speak English?

More or less I am just looking for information on how to get myself a foot on the ground for when I arrive. If you can help me out all or would like to chat on MSN GREAT!

Peace out

Wow! That was some introduction.
Welcome to the Forum.
If I were you, I'd take a bit of time to wade through a few Threads on the subjects you need information on.
There are masses of house being built, but as to the chance of a job there, I can't help. If you post in the Jobs Section you might get specific answers from people who know more about it than I do.

This may be a very small place by Canadian standards, but Switzerland is a country...

If our experience is anything to go by, the Swiss Army will have your equipment waiting for you when you arrive at the border to enter the country When we moved to England, my Swiss husband received (at our new address) a letter from the Swiss Consulate in London before we had even said we had arrived. Big brother is watching you!
Good luck with the searching.

Hey Davyboy, from what you say (besides CH being a city),
there are plenty of plumbing jobs here.at the bottom i will refer you to some job web-sites.but first,it is really imperative that you have a command of another language here, esp. in the Construction Trades, you say in Lausanne so ob. French.
The thing is,w/ my exp. here in Zürich as an Insulator (and yes - you guys really know how to make us think) you will come by serious competition in your field.
If you have ANY: and i mean Any papers of certification as to your abilities you will need them, and if possible,Written letters of job performance from previous employers. You may need these translated as that will also help,but......and this is a seriously big Butt,
you will be competing for this job with people from all over CH,and in Switzerland itself who have gone to trades school such as you.
I really do not want to sound negative, just that you know the ropes,so to speak,as for jobs, the wages round out to about the same as you described per hour, but the cost of living here is much higher,so it actually comes out much lower.....and it is possible you may have to find work first through a Personal Büro which reduces your income a lil' bit less.
I hope this does not discourage you,but I went thru my year of frustrations (re.Hell) without knowing what to expect at all,and had to deal with all as new expereriences I was not accumstomed to in the U.S. Trades.
I am sure you will do allright, but remember, every lil' bit of positive feedback from previous employers and schools goes a helluva long way here...........
good luck Canuck.

(not derogatory) I have Can. friends.

Web-sites:

www.speed.ch
www.jobs.ch
www.ostjobs.ch
www.schaufenster.ch (this one lists other search sites as well as companies)

these should help get you started in the right direction Davyboy.
good luck.

p.s. when you see the word find box,try punching in engisch,or other language pref.

Sorry, it wasn't very nice of me to correct it like that anyway - I had guessed it was just a slip-up. However, the Swiss are VERY keen on correct details. I was just giving you a gentle hint as to what awaits you here!

Hope all goes well. Keep us posted.
