Newbie from the land of Oz

Hi all, Ich heisse Tony...recent arrival from Australia...Brisbane, Qld (Go Maroons..and Broncos), I'll be here for a while before attending a Hotel Management school in Leysin in September (recent decision).

A wee bit about me..obviously a rugby league supporter, I play roller hockey (Australian goalkeeper), am ....cough, cough 43..Queensland Police officer on extended leave...to resign due to my recent decision on a career change...Currently attending the Migros Klubschule to learn some basic German, staying with a friend in Hinterkappelen. Love Switzerland, such a beautiful country (love the lack of fast food outlets!), and love some of the strange quirks the Swiss seem to have...

Hey Tony,
Welcome to Switzerland and to the EF, there's a bunch of Aussies here. And I'm sure most of us will forgive you for supporting the Broncos...

Re: Newbie from the land of Oz

My reasons for being in Switzerland are many....a girlfriend influenced the decision....but absolutely love it here! Had some doubts prior to coming because of the talk of how expensive everything is....but it really is not that much different to Aus...except higher wages, lower taxes and interest rates...I don't think Australia is sooooo lucky anymore! And I was looking for a change from the Qld coppers..unfortunately modern Australian Policing is not so much about doing the job (helping the good guys, pinching the bad), but rather more about doing the job in the best way that makes sure you have CYA....and instead of majority of shift patrolling and some paperwork it has been reversed....and the lack of manpower!!!!!! So I started here on holiday, and whilst here have decided on a career change..SHMS here I come...

Nobody in Australia believes this, as much as I tell them.

Re: Newbie from the land of Oz

CYA= cover your ass...doing something in such a way that you can't get in trouble....
SHMS= The Swiss School of Hotel Management..(Leysin and Caux Palace above Montreux

Although I will have to apply for a student visa now...and I have been advised (not sure if correctly) that I have to return to Australia to do this, and not apply here in Switzerland...which is going to be a trick as I was initially planning to do more travelling and won't be back in Australia before the semester starts in September! I plan to post the question in the appropriate thread once I've investigated further.

Sadly, it's not like the 80s any more when Queensland Police used to be rather well-off

Just jokes. Welcome to Switzerland and to EF!

Re: Newbie from the land of Oz

No offence taken...when I graduated from the academy we had a Sergeant who said when he graduated they were told (out of public) "this is Qld, it is a police state, you will run it as you see fit"...admittedly...violent crime was lower in those days....
