Zurich via Berlin and California

Grüezi,

I'm moving to Zurich later this fall after a year in Berlin and thought I should introduce myself since I've been spending so much time reading everyone else's questions and answers.

I'm a native Ohioan but spent about six years pre-Berlin in southern California. This is a work-related move, and I've actually only been to Zurich twice -- most recently a couple of weeks ago to find an apartment -- but so far it seems adorable. (After Berlin the cost of a beer is shocking, though...) I'm looking forward to the road biking and to living someplace with mountains again. And I'm bringing my cat, who came with me from California and is now the proud owner of a German pet passport.

I speak German but am totally at sea with Swiss German... but I'll be living with three Swiss roommates who have strict instructions to teach me a little bit of dialect, so we'll see.

This forum has already been a great resource -- on neighborhoods, pet immigration, restaurants, taxes, etc., etc., etc. -- thanks so much! Y'all are awesome.

Welcome to the Forum.
Good to hear from you that you have managed to find useful infos here.
Hope your roommates all speak the same Swiss German dialect or your land up with a version like mine - some words Basel, some Baselland, a couple Berner Oberland, a chunk Aargau, two or three Schwyz and, to my husbands disgust, a couple of words belonging to the Zürcher dialect - all pronounced with an English accent of course.
Hope you settle in well and that all goes smoothly.

One roommate is from Zurich and the others from elsewhere -- including one place that apparently has an accent other Swiss make fun of, but I forget where that is -- so if I learn anything it's going to be a hodgepodge like yours. Ah well! Thanks for the well-wishes!

Don't worry. Folk very rarely have difficulty understanding what I mean so in the end, it doesn't matter much!

I love Berlin and I think you will miss it.

Yes, welcome!

Good to hear you've already got the apartment sorted, that will make things easier for you... since you have flatmates, I'm assuming you'll be bringing the minimum of furniture but, if you need more, I'm sure you already know how swiftly you can pick up second-hand stuff at very reasonable prices...

Pet immigration

Hallo
We're contemplating a family relocation to Basel.
However we have pets involved.
Does anyone know where I can find information about bringing the following animals into Switzerland from the UK. I'd like to bring them in overland rather than via air.
2 dogs
1 Floridan cornsnake
& 2 giant african land snails.

Kind regards

ps. I can't see how to post new threads on this site, as I'm new, so I apologise I've tacked this on the end of someone elses thread.

Re: Zurich via Berlin and California

hi, welcome to Zürich! I also just moved from Berlin (after 5 and a half years! I am originally Dutch, though) to Zürich and -erm- it's different, not just the price of beer . If you like to do a collective "we miss the cheap appartments and curry 36 and clärchens ballhaus and the bebop bar" session, drop me a PM, I'll get the beer :-)

Where do you come from, in Ohio? I know it a little, attended a Cincinnati summer school for a month, and another month of phd work at Ohio State Uni. Columbus was quite unexciting though...but I love being in the States and OSU is a great uni for mechanical engineers. Also went to see a baseball game which was tons of fun until a thunderstorm came and we all got quite scared and wet :-)

good luck in Zürich!
