New in Lausanne area

Hi there.. I'm Lydia.. moved to Morges (nr Lausanne) on the 1st December and although I've been living here for almost 2 months now.. haven't had the chance to socialise much... with hectic work schedule, settling into my flat, going back to the UK to finish paperwork etc.... and now that I'm almost settled I find that I really miss going out for drinks, dinner, dancing etc.. all those things I use to do back in London. I know Switzerland is definitely far from having the social life of London but surely there must be nice bars and a whole lot of things to do. I like meeting people and if there anything organised between some people on this forum in between Lausanne and Geneva then can someone lead me to the thread as I'll def. be interested!

I'm into sports and I was a Modern Jive and salsa teacher in London. I have already been on one of the threads on this site about salsa clubs and where to find them.. but I thought I best introduced myself.. it's the right thing to do

I also love motorbikes and I used to ride a Ninja ZX-6 (600cc sportsbike for those who don't know much about motorbikes) until it got stolen last year.

I'm an Executive PA here working for an Intl. phamaceutical co. and I live with my 8 months old kitten.

I am French.. well after 15 years in London my friends .. and even family say I'm English.. from the sense of humour to that very British Sarcasm and because of a lack of practice I would say that my french isn't what it used to!

Dunno what else to say.. so best leave it here.. any questions, just ask!

Lydia

Re: New in Lausanne area

Welcome to Lausanne/Morges Lydia, I'm new to this forum, but been in Lausanne for over 2 years now.

Not been on here long enough to know about people from here meeting up, but I am hoping us more Lausanne-based people can arrange some sort of get together.

Good luck getting settled in!!

Re: New in Lausanne area

Hey LoyalRoyal, thank you very much for the welcome

2 years in Lausanne so you must know good places to go adn things to do around here....

I'm already meeting up with a girl on this forum called Lizzette who's been here 10 months and lives also in Morges, meeting her for a coffee tomorrow afternoon.. still finding difficult to find that most places are closed on Sunday.. that's when I used to do all my shopping in the UK!

I think it'll be great to meet other people from this forum and I'm definitely up for it! Driving to Montreux tonight to check out a salsa evening... it's easier to socialise while dancing rather than going to a bar my myself!

Hope something gets arranged soon... if you hear of something, don't forget to let me know!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Lydia

Re: New in Lausanne area

Good news guys, it's really easy to organize a get together through this forum - all we need to do is pick a time, day, and place and send a few messages.

HeatherM and I twice tried to organize such an event in Lausanne last year, in October and November (see one, two, three previous threads on these). There were some people who were interested, but in the end no-one apart from us came (except for one or two other people from outside of the forum). Fortunately, since that time there appears to have been a significant growth in the number of forum members from this region, including people like you who have explicitly expressed a hope for such an event. So, we're game to give it another try, are you folks in?

The important thing to really get somthing like this going regularly will be to have a core group of at least 5 or 6 people who come most of the time. Add to that those who come occasionally and we would have a sustainable event going, which I think would be great.

I believe in striking while the iron is hot. On the other hand, we need to give people a reasonable amount of warning. Balancing these two goals, we could try to do something during the week of Jan 29th - Feb 2nd. What do you think?

I understand from other people who organized events thru this forum that mid-week generally works better than fridays or weekends, and this matches the experience that I had when organizing similar events for international students when I was in Canada. Therefore, the two prime candidates would be Wed, Jan 31st, or Thurs, Feb 1st. Any thoughts?

As for the time, I think that 8pm is reasonable: not too early, not too late - what do you think?

The venue should be somewhere that is not too noisy (so we can hear each other) and generally not too busy on the chosen night (so that there is enough space should we need it). I really like the Pinte Besson, which is at Rue de l'Ale 4 in Lausanne (map link). It is never too noisy, has lots of character (I think that it must be the oldest bar in Lausanne), and has reasonable beer and wine prices (plus some pretty good Vaudoise food if you're hungry). However, the down-sides are that the drink selection is not huge (but what they have is nice) plus it is not very big (although it is normally not very full). Do you have any alternative suggestions?

As for how to get people to come, we should start a dedicated thread once we have a definite time, day, and venue, and it would be best to do that on Monday (22nd) or Tuesday (23rd) at the latest. Plus, we can send private messages to all forum members who expressed an interest when we tried to organize the previous events, plus anyone who has joined the forum since then and has expressed an interest in events in this region.

So, in conclusion, let's make something happen in Lausanne!

Re: New in Lausanne area

Hi Chris

Well, either of those days are good for me... depending on the work load I can be there for either 8pm or 8:30pm. The venue sounds fine too... I don't drink beer but I do like good red wine... and as long as we're not standing around like sardines.. that should be a good venue

Count me in!

Lydia

Re: New in Lausanne area

Hello Lydia!

I am new to Lausanne myself (been here since Jan 10), and hoping that with the few of us who have recently arrived (on the forum or in the region), we can do as Chris suggests and find a time and place to meet up.

Chris - interesting to hear that more success was had with mid-week rendez-vous than Friday night. What do people do that keeps them busy on the weekends? I fully expect in a few months time to be WAY too busy for ANYthing mid-week apart from work and the odd last minute dash to the local Coop/Migros. That was certainly the case back in NZ.

Re: New in Lausanne area

Hiya

Well welcome to the area! Would love to give you a few pointers but I know nothing . So why the move from NZ to Lausanne? Do you live there?

With regards to your question about why not meeting during weekends is probably because that's when everyone else goes out... and all the good places to are far too crowed for a decent "meeting" evening. Personally I don't really mind, it'll just be nice to have something happening... and et to meet more people... well I only know one other! I met her today and we went in this really cool cafe in Morges... they serve the BEST hot chocolate I've ever tasted... their hot chocolate menu is like a good wine list in a restaurant.. didn't know there were so many diff. ways to making chocolate! Tried one with cinnamon and another with hot chili pepper! Was really nice to meet Lizzette, great girl and we spent a good couple of hours chatting... anyway, hope it won't be too long till a group of us on this forum meet up

Hope you're settling well.

Lydia

Re: New in Lausanne area

ChrisW,

Either of the dates sound good to me. Wednesday is the new Friday anyway, or something like that...

I've not been to that bar, but I know where it is, it should be pretty easy for people to find and if you say it's quiet enough to talk in, then it sounds ideal to me.

I should be able to make it, along with my other half, and possibly a fellow brit from work too so that's 3 for you.

Cheers,

LoyalRoyal

Re: New in Lausanne area

Great, sounds like no-one has any changes to the plan for drinks that I suggested, so I'll go ahead and start a dedicated thread. This evening, I'll send out a few personal messages to make sure that most of those who might be interested are aware of it. I'm looking forward to meeting you all. I'll also bring my better half and maybe another friend.

Lydia, I'm sorry to have hijacked your Introduction thread for this purpose. The hot chocolate place you went to sounds great, you'll have to tell us where it is.

Re: New in Lausanne area

I've now started a dedicated thread for the drinks / social evening event here. Please post any further comments about the event on that thread instead of this one, thanks. It's great to have so much positive feedback on the proposal, thanks.

Well, you just missed a third for this year on Friday. No plans are in place for another as of yet, but keep looking out for them - there's bound to be one soon.

Re: New in Lausanne area

There will be more Lausanne pub nights that's for sure! Best piss-up in town (apparently, I can't really remember much of the last one ). Just keep an eye out here. My guess is that there will be another in a week or two.

Sam.

I am interested in playing some volleyball too, but I am also new to lausanne. I have spoken to few people about starting beach volleyball...that would be in summer. If you know anyone playing indoor and need a player and speak little bit of english...let me know.
Take care

Hot chocolate in Lausanne and Geneva

Hi guys
I know there is a great hot chocolate place in Lausanne, le barbare, which is at the top of the escaliers by the cathedral. I was wondering if there is a similar place in Geneva.. I just came back from a trip in germany and got a similar list of assorted hot chocolates , which were all very warm and also thick and creamy. I know le Barbare does something similar but I think they do their own in house brand and don't offer lots of fancy flavours like the Eraclea brand do.
Anyway, hot choc places in Geneva??

Re: New in Lausanne area

Hi
I moved from Montreux-the cemetery with traffic lights in winter-to Lausanne last year .I found the social life here much more sophisticated than the bars and tourist traps of the so called 'Swiss Riviera' of the upper Lac.

The best way I found to get to rapidly meet new interesting people was through the Glocals website events starting with the monthly central Lausanne Drinks do on the first Friday of every month.

From there we organise ski trips, spa bath R&R days, restaurant evenings, sailing.biking, hikes etc-with pubbing and clubbing left to the Geneva crowd.
For an invite to our next meeting email me at glocalski@gmail.com
cheers
Malawrite at Lausanne-pc
