Is this the effect of Zurich's tram lag?

Re: I can't sleep !

I recommend plant therapy from Zeller. You can find it in a pharmacy.

The name of the tablets are Sommeil forte or Schlaf forte.

It won't knock you out like the hard stuff, but at least you aren't all dopey the next morning. You take it an hour before you want to be asleep and hope the best, repeating the procedure every night until you are back into a normal sleeping pattern.

Why would anyone go to bed at 6:30 pm though? No matter how tired you feel in the early evening, it's better to force yourself to stay up until 9pm to be sure to sleep the whole night through!

Good luck!

Re: I can't sleep !

Try finding someone from USA that can bring/send u (or order it online) tylenol PM. I'm needing a batch myself....

Nothing worse than not sleeping! I feel for you.
What is your bedroom like? I mean is it conducive to sleeping?
Dark, cool, not too loud?

Have a cool shower before going to sleep as people tend to sleep better when the body is at a cooler temperature - I was once told.

You don't mention if you have not benn sleeping for a while. Why do you think you fell asleep at 6.30pm?

Have a read of the following (personally reading & 1/2 bottle of wine tends to help )

www.sleepfoundation.org

Let us know how you get on ce soir!

Re: I can't sleep !

I was just reading a magazine about how to improve the quality and length of sleep.

Dont turn your bedroom into an amusement parlour. You should not watch TV, read thrilling books that cant be put down, or take work to bed.

Know the risk of "sleeep debt". People who suffer chronic loss of sleep may develop diabetes and weight gain ( Thats a bit to harsh), not to mention concertration loss, depression, anxiety, moodiness and general clumsiness.

See tha light. You will find it easier to wake up if you expose yourself to dirct sunlight when youre stirring.

Go to bed an wake up at the regular time. The more established your sleep routines, the better sleep will come.

Sundays are an important night. This will help you to catch up from any "sleep dept" from weekend.

Reduce noise. This is a major sleep inhibitor.

Be sock savvy. They might be passion killers, but people who wear socks in bed fall asleep faster than those who dont.

If you cant sleep, get up. If you're having difficulties nodding off, its better to get up and do something rather than lying there.

Be bed savvy. Buy a comfortable mattress and quality sheets. Also swap sides with your partner sometimes( that helped my husband)

I dont know how serious it is, but give it a try

Re: I can't sleep !

I have a sleep disorder of some kind as well....I'm borderline insomniac but refuse to take sleeping pills b/c they can become addictive.
I'm lucky if most nights I can get a good 4-5hrs of UNinterrupted sleep....also, I am the lightest sleep when I am sleeping. A slight movement, noise wakes me up immediately! nobody could ever rob me, b/c I'd be up the second I heard anything funny.

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, it's a horrible feeling, being physically tired but with the active mind still going that won't let you pass out.

dwilki - those are great suggestions. especially the one about getting up. that's what my Dr back in Canada said when I refused to continue to take prescribed pills. if you lie there awake, you just make it worse b/c you start counting the hours you have to sleep before work..etc etc...and then it gets really frustrating!

Carrie - what is this Zeller you speak of? is it natural?
I've tried the valerian and all the other *herbal* remedies, nothing. my body just doesn't want sleep. I'd like to look into that Zeller product.

anyways, hope you slept. i know it's horrible when you can't.
I had a good night, 4hrs!!! whoooo hooooo!

It must be awful, I am sorry for you. I used to take Calms in UK before my driving test, but it helped me sleep as well. Also stop drinking coffee and tea 6 hours before sleep. Good luck both of you, I can imagine how it feels. My husband had that problem, but it got much better without doing anything. Fingers crossed

Re: I can't sleep !

You can actually get them over the counter here I think, although measures that others have suggested are probably more healthy. Mild antidepressents St Johns Wart etc (I'm not recommending these either) also have the side effect of making you sleepy. Check out your lifestyle first, then if necessary check with a doc.

dave

PS: Alcohol may appear to cause unconsciousness & sleep , but its not healthy sleep, and certainly not under the pool table...

PS. Even if you are both M or F

Re: I can't sleep !

Wow we do have a lot of pharmacists among us here!

Europat - you slept at 6:30 - woke up at 11:30 - that's 5 hours of sleep non-stop - which is that bad at all - maybe that's all that your body needed last night.

have an afternoon siesta - take the sleeping bag to work, lie low under your desk - and you won't need to go bed so early tonight.

Re: I can't sleep !

I have sometimes sleeping problems....in times like this, I just work through the night....I have tried a lot of stuff, but nothing seems to help. A power nap (not sleep) in the afternoon should help....Just sit comfortably and hold an apple in one hand....for 20 minutes...you'll be amazed...

Re: I can't sleep !

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!!! Wear yourself out - however you so wish - so that you are physically tired before bed. Try bodypump @ a gym near you.
Plus it helps you to work out any stress you might be feeling.

I too have had suffered from insomnia for pretty much half my life. I only buy over the counter sleep aids now if I know I'm not going to sleep.

Much to my glee the problem seems to have sorted itself out (touch wood) in the last few months....and now I'm addicted to sleep!

Re: I can't sleep !

I tried the exercise at night thing and it made me worse!! I was more pumped after

but yeah, I try to stay active, walking alot...plus the cleaning jobs I took are quite physical...I do not drink coffee (like ever) and only drink herbal teas (usually green with some lemon) I also do not drink pop or juices, I drink water alllll day long, that's it. Not a big sugar fan and never have been which is good b/c that won't help!

I went to a sleep disorder clinic in Canada and that's when my dr. started prescribing these pills to help me get into an REM stage...but I wasn't comfortable taking those. I just have come to terms with it I guess. if my body only needs 4hrs to function, well...then so be it I suppose! lol
my mom said my dads pretty much the same, he runs off of little sleep...maybe it's heriditary?

Re: I can't sleep !

Jenniferd - I like you went through living on 4 hrs sleep. I'm happy to say that I'm glad it's over. I don't miss missing steps off trams, bumping into table corners (leaving huge bruises) etc. I hope for you it's just a phase at that you'll come out the otherside like me.

Re: I can't sleep !

thanks bails! me too...but this has been an ongoing issue since I was very little. my mom had a helluva time getting me to sleep through the night!
poor woman! haha

but like I said, I just stopped fighting it b/c it would get to the point that I'd be bawling b/c I just WANTED TO SLEEP and couldn't.
I just go with it now, I don't feel bad MOST days...some days though I?m like you, walking into crap, disoriented, crabby as heck! but those days are fleeting. I am in a weird state of acceptance of this problem and oddly enough, it seems to be ok right now.

(although the lack of sleep sometimes makes it very hard for me to try and teach myself german due to lack of concentration! I think that irks me more than anything else)
