Macchu Picchu? One of my friends got bitten by a snake on the Inca trail years ago, and had to be medivac'd out by helicopter. It cost some insane amount at the time, eg USD$15000...

And we're looking at going to Iceland in mid summer for a few days. It's got Europe's largest waterfall, and a pretty anarchic nightlife. It's expensive but not toooo bad. One of my mates was in Rekjavik(sp?) a couple of weeks ago for a stag night; he reckons beers there are about chf 2 more expensive than Zurich.

yes,
six feet under absolutely made me re-discover my existential side. My boyfriend gave me the poster of the 5th season (you know, everything, everywhere, ...ends) as a present. Brilliant! Unforte I had to leave him (the boyfriend, not the poster) behind in central PA.
Plaetzli are those 'pancakes' filled with cheese (my favourite) or spinach or mushrooms which you can find in the frozen section in your supermarket (Findus). The perfect-I-don't-want-to-cook, but need some comfort food in 5 minutes-food. Missed them a lot in the US and been addicted to them since I moved back to Europe.
Iceland in mid-summer sounds like a dream... enjoy!

It only seems to operate in mid summer, during the snow melt....

To quote a nice German idiom:
"Everything has an end, only a sausage has two."

But don't people just love to talk about themselves? We all do, everyone wants to tell others who we are. In my experience, to woo a person, you talk about THEM. It's if you want to woo them or not.
But how many people read all the posts that had 4 things about each person for each category??
And who enjoyed it when others responded to those categories?
I like receiving pats too.

"Talk to someone about something that the other person is most interested in: themselves." (Dale Carneague, How to Win Friends and Influence People)
There is something slightly distasteful IMO about spontaneous "I am really interesting and this is why" posts. It tends to be a gushing US thing in my experience, to which my "Brit humo ur" answer is often "Why are you telling me this ?"
"Anyway, enough about me. Lets talk about you... "

dave | | | | | Oh Dave, you have proved yourself to be so interesting though... so even if the Americans are out to talk about themselves, the Brits win in being more interesting to listen to... even if they avoid the topic of themselves.
Thanks for the spelling lesson. So kind of you. Interesting and giving! My my...

To which the stateside answer - as featured in so many dramas would be :
"I'm just doin' my job. It's what I do."
or translated for English viewers :
"You're welcome."

If you may be so bold as to enquire...? Of course, as now we have been introduced...
I do nothing particularly exciting, but it is very hightech , but it's not IT, finance or pharma - all of which leave me colder than a swiss Parteee.
Things I am least likely to say unless I morph into a Valley-Girl:
"Geeee ! Are we having a great time yet ?"
On the other hand the English translation, I am likely to say :
"We had a great time."
Note the assessment made after the event rather than during it. A subtle difference.
Any more about me would be too much for one sitting

Yes, this 'four things' about me stuff actually tells you bugger all about the person, most of the post's may as well by from machines - very american!
I don't know anything about any of the people that have posted here.
I suppose, though, that it could be considered 'chit chat', break the ice kind of thing, an excuse to get personal maybe.
But as no one follows up, it's a waste of space.....

It is the second question after what's your name which many Swiss will ask while at a party.

Or in the words of the great Michael Barrymore:
"Whats yer name and where d'ya come from ?"
I've always found anyone that says "That's what I do." to be really strange, as though this answer justifies their raison-d'etre.
