Hello moving to Basel Switzerland from USA (NJ)

Hello - I have been on this forum now for a few months but never did a true introduction.

I am a 27 yr old female moving to Basel with my partner (boyfriend) due to his job. We have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter. We plan on moving as early as mid May end of May once his temporary housing is all situated.

At the present time I will not be working once there but hoping in the near future to look for work. I plan to enjoy as much as Europe and get to learn the new language as I hope my daughter will be able to pick it up since she is so young (I hope by the time we leave she is tri-lingual) As we also speak spanish.

looking forward to meet new ppl and have playdates for my daughter.

Sharon

Hi Sharon, and a late welcome! Always nice to read an introduction from somebody who has been around for a while.

Hi Sharon,

NJ hey, I'll actually be in East Hanover for a few days the week after next! I'm going to guess your partner works for Novartis, or failing that Roche, as it seems quite a lot of the people who move here work for one them. Or maybe that's just the view from inside the Pharma industry bubble

One piece of advice I'll offer for when land here, specially with little kid, is food - the supermarkets all close by 2000 on weekdays, 1800 on Saturdays and don't open at all on Sundays. This caught me out when I first got here (was used to hour 24 hour shopping in the UK ) and my first meal was some horrible dehydrated microwave thingy from a petrol station!
If you land late, there's a small Co-Op in Badischer Bahnhof that's open 0500-2300 every day.

Hope this helps, but if you need any other pointers as to where find things when you get here feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help!

Hello Sharon and welcome! We live in Basel since September and we're really happy so far. I have a 2 1/2 boy, and this is a nice place to grow a child! I'm sure you'll be happy too.

Good morning and welcome to the EF.
I have to be honest and say not to plan to work full time if you have small children that need tending to. As they get older the kindergarden and schools usually close for 2 hours at lunch time, so your full time job will be caretaker and bus driver. You'll have to look into the local areas hours as they change from region to region slightly.
Good luck
