I registered to this forum yesterday and I thought I would introduce myself a little.
I am living in Allschwil in Baseland.I have been in Switzerland a long long time,17 years to be exact.I work in the avaition industry based at Basel airport.
I spent my first 25 years growing up in Dublin before heading out here on my new adventure.The plan was to get through my 3 months probation period and then see what happens.I think it is clear that somethings about living in Switzerland(especially Basel)really impressed me and I decided to stay.
Switzerland in now my home and although I miss living in Ireland to some extent if I did not come here I would not have met so many fantastic people.

So for all of you who have just arrived and are feeling a little unsure about the living conditions here I have this to say:Give it a bit of time,get out and meet people(Swiss people too are very nice)learn some of the local lingo and enjoy all that Switzerland has to offer.

PS:After living here for 17 years I know a lot of the difficulties people have experienced.This does not mean that all things or people are bad.

I have lived in Basel for 18 years and I always found the very few negative aspects of living here...and I can't think of any at the moment have always been out weighed by the very positive things of being here. I am certainly very happy living here and intend to stay here. I certainly have no desire to return to the UK.

Moving countries is something like changing a relationship, you miss the old one, but the new one has it's perks. If the new one isn't as it seemed, some people go back to the ex! (SOME, not me). It just takes few years to see the whole picture to make an educated decision. For me it was 2 years in love, 2 years of hate, 2 years of confusion, and since then, trying to decide which is best for us and my 3 boys who have 3 nationalities. WE STAY! Everyone will be trilingual someday and have 3 passports, the opportunities for my boys will be endless.
Plus now I have a business to run and guarantees to honour. I think every country has its goods and bads (people and environment), and we adapt to what pleases us best.

I too am from Dublin, Whitehall to be exact ! I'm guessing you're from Finglas ? I have been here almost 6 years in Zurich and really like it, although I miss the Irish craic ! I have been out of Ireland for almost 22 years,have lived all over , a lot in the U.S, but get to go back home quite a bit. My husband is also a Dub, from Drumcondra. Did you watch the Ireland game last night !Two wins in a row, wow.

Another here from dublin..santry this time! staying within that northside circle! I am just a newbie to basel..I am now 3 years coming back and forward to my boyfriend every chance I get free from college and anything in between, he comes to Ireland. But we both prefer switzerland hands down!

I am 21 this year, but quite ambitious about what I want in life. And one of those things I just know, is that I want to live and work here in switzerland!! I feel very at home here, the economy is stable, the political system isn't off its rocker and everything just runs smoothly..yes i know some people hate that rigidness, but i love it! I feel very relaxed knowing exactly when I arrive at college (was studying here for 3months). I laughed one morning to see an old woman pacing angrily when a train was delayed 5 mins!! haha!! Whereas in dublin..don't talk to me!! one example: I was standing 1.5hours waiting on a bus home on o'connell street last october! To add to that the ran was lashing down and I had no umbrella..i literally poured water from my shoes when I got home..no kidding!
