| | | American Moving to Switz (German Part) Looking for English Friends for Activities.
Hello, my name is Cherie. I will be moving to Switzerland the 2nd weekend in July to live with my Swiss boyfriend. We are both 32 years old. I will be staying with him in Zofingen, but we will probably relocate closer to Zurich in the Fall. (I need to be closer to the action and English speaking population). I am American. I was born in the Philadelphia area and have lived in San Diego, CA for 8 years and have also spend a year living and teaching in Seoul, S. Korea. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher, although I will probably not be able to work in Switzerland because of the restrictions
I plan to take German classes, join a gym and find some kind of work. Right now, I have no German knowledge. I am looking for single friends and couple friends to hang out with. Age and race is not important. I would love to meet someone who wants to practice German together, get a cup of coffee, go out get some drinks, etc. I also like many outdoor activities, biking, hiking, just exploring the area. I plan on getting monthly train passes while I am there. Is anyone else in the same situation or looking for some friends? I also have a facebook page if you want to check me out....Cherie Fesi I hope to hear from some of you Thanks for reading.

| | | Moving to Glanzenburg (Dietikon area)
Hi All,
In March I will finally be moving closer to Zurich. Its been hard living in the country for a year. I still can't understand the dialect and have no idea what people are saying to me. I'm looking forward to being close to Baden and Zurich. Does anyone live in the Dietikon area? I will be looking for some new local eateries, bars & a fitness center.. Also, if anyone in the area wants to meet outside this spring would be great to have a drink outside when the sun it shining..
Looking forward to making some new friends.
Cherie

we are also moving to Zürich in April after a brief stop in Bavaria, previously in San Diego for 5 years, near Little Italy. My wife is German, I'm British with almost fluent German. We could definitaly hook up at some time in the future.

Hello Cherie,
Welcome I just moved here from Southern California but spend lots of time in La Jolla. I live in Basel which I think it isn't to far from Zurich. My husband is Swiss and I'm also taking a French course soon. If you are in the area we can hang out.

This statement is fraught with far fetched assumptions about the OP and about Americans as a whole.
2. It is not uncommon, or particularly American, for people to find friends among a group that feels similar to them. Cherie made it clear here that dissimilarities are welcome to her. While you are unlikely to ever hear "I am looking for white friends," you will not have to look too hard to find "Any other Asians in the area?"
3. Americans are too many and too diverse to dump into a big bag of "people in America" who all behave and think in the same way.
4. The original post is a year and a half old!

Do two wrongs make a right? Well, they didn't when I was at school. Separatism of any type is largely a bad thing whether white, Asian, black, or anything else, it surely should not be an issue or even worth mentioning, unless, (and this is what my question pertains to), it is common place to see messages which request the friendship or companionship of only one strand of humanity, and if so, is racism in America purely assumed until proven incorrect? And lastly why is it that this 'varied and diverse' group you are talking about often adamantly desires the company of individuals indistinguishable from themselves? |

Cherie | | | | | Hey, I'm from California and lived near Dietikon/Glanzenburg for 14 years. The awesome bike ride (once the weather gets nice) is along the river towards Zurich. First you hit Klosterfahr, an 800 year old nunnary with nice outdoor restaurant. After that there is a killer island in the middle of the river with grass and BBQ area called Werdinsel, awesome for swimming and hanging out. Then continue on towards Zurich along the river and you pass a bunch more bathing areas, restaurants, and then you land in Spitzplatz, that island park behind the main station. You can also do the other direction from Glanzenberg to Baden. There is more nature that direction and less services until you hit Baden. This was my weekend outing for over 10 years. Another challenging ride is straight up the hill direction Urdorf, Uitikon, then up to the top of Uetliberg. Have a beer, enjoy the view, and then come flying back down (takes about 1.5 hours up and 30 minutes down). I moved out into the country in 2009, so I am not there anymore, I am now discovering new biking adventures in Kanton Aargau.

You know, it's a slow day at work. So I will break this down for you.
Now, let's just disagree on the Americans thing for a while. We first need to figure out how to discuss, define what an assumption is, what a statement is, and what a question is. I will use your own words to show you examples. | Quote: | | | | What a grim state of affairs that the Americans have to publicly announce which social and or ethnic grouping is appropriate friend material | | | | | This part of what you wrote includes an assumption on your part that Americans must announce which groups are friend material. | Quote: | | | | do other people in America actually indicate age and or race to be 'important' in messages? | | | | | This part is a question, just like you yourself said. | Quote: | | | | if so, is racism in America purely assumed until proven incorrect? | | | | | This part is also a question. The answer could (and in fact does) fill many books. My answer is no.
Now, on to slightly more complicated examples you have provided: | Quote: | | | | And lastly why is it.... ? | | | | | This is the question frame, which is trying its darnest to make this assumption statement below: | Quote: | | | | that this 'varied and diverse' group you are talking about often adamantly desires the company of individuals indistinguishable from themselves | | | | | look like a question.
