Canadian moves to Switzerland seeking chocolate...

Hi Everyone!

I am new to Switzerland, as I have just moved here with my Swiss husband. I'm hoping to make friends, find work and join some sort of sports team to combat against all the delicious cheese and chocolate I have been eating!

I read posts on this forum often, and have found them very helpful, so thought I would join and contribute whatever I can to the exchange of information.

I'm currently located in Kreuzlingen, but will be moving to Basel or Zurich depending on what kind of work I can find.

Good luck to all the other friend-seekers, job-seekers, and otherwise.

Cheers!

Re: Canadian moves to Switzerland seeking chocolate...

Hi Wilbur,
Very welcome to the forum. I am a newbie myself!!

My husband and I will be moving to Basel early next year so I am trying to wrap my head around everything before we arrive. This forum is great for providing so much information.
But since you are with a Swiss I am sure you will have a much easier time with things.
If you do end up in Basel, I hope to run into at one of the EF events.

Re: Canadian moves to Switzerland seeking chocolate...

Hello everyone,

I guess this is less of an introduction and more of a re-introduction... I have just recently relocated to Basel (from Kreuzlingen) with my Swiss husband. I am loving it so far and am looking forward to making new friends and getting to know the city a little better. I am living in Kleinbasel and enjoying the character of this part of the city very much.

I will begin my master's program in March, but until then am seeking out sports clubs (especially basketball, though it seems a little hopeless going by previous threads on this forum!), cute cafes, and good places for live music.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this great website, I have learned a lot so far and hope I can be of assistance to some of you at some point!

To answer the Masters question, the program is Masters of Advanced Studies in Peace and Conflict Transformation. Its a new program accredited by the University of Basel... starts in March and should be interesting!

Does this program have to do with Johan Galtung, the famous peace researcher and many times candidate for the peace Nobel price? If you're not familiar with him, see his website. His assistant is working in/around Basel. Isn't it a small world? Should you want to know more, then simply send my a personal message.

Hi Wilbur,

I'm actually considering to apply for this programme too! I just found it recently and it seems like a better option than going to a uni in the UK.

I'm half-Canadian and married as well

Would you mind PMing me when you applied for the programme and what's your background is, so that I can re-evaluate my chances.

I'm not sure if I have time to get into the March start but read that they have a June one too.

Thanks,

Marz

Welcome to Switzerland and the forum, Wilbur!
Have you discovered the joys of Sprungli? There's an outlet in the Basel main train station. Be sure also to sample the many flavours of Luxemburgeli -- to gain enough calories to fuel your energetic sports.

It absolutely does have something to do with him! He is quite involved with the program, and will be lecturing for several weeks throughout. I am just starting to learn about him myself, pretty interesting guy! Thanks for the tip!

Merz- I send you a PM in response

And as for the Sprungli chocolate comment, I am familiar, but I am suddently feeling the urge to refamiliarise myself with them.... and not to worry, never seem to have enough trouble building up the calories for sports... ugh. Gotta have balance, right?
