New in Geneva - hello to everyone :)

Hi, I'm russian-speaking ukrainian from Latvia , and now I started working in Geneva It's my first week here, I came in Monday evening. For now it all seems new and ununderstandable, but I hope with the help of this forum it will start to get clearer Hope to make some friends here.
BTW how do you get around town or nearby if you don't have car?

Never thought of using them for this.

How do you become a legitimate passenger of one of such boxes?

Well in every place these boxes stop there is a piece of machinery called a ticket machine. You just press the appropriate button depending on where you want to go, put the correct amount of money in (indicated on the machine), and get a piece of paper out. That is called a ticket :P

Just make sure you have one of these on every journey because if some bad men called ticket inspectors catch you without one you are f****d :P

If you are going to use those boxes a lot, its a good idea to get a monthly or yearly ticket. Go to a ticket office in the train station with a picture and some id and its done

Hi and welcome in Geneva

If you stay in the town's perimeter you can also walk......

Geneva is a really small town....

Hi Vitaly and welcome to Geneva!

For now the boxes (as mentioned above) and also the boxes which are attached to rails (also known as trams) are your best bet, but as soon as the ice is gone get yourself a bicycle - Geneva is small and you can get more or less anywhere by bike in about 20 minutes maximum...

Cheers,
GS

Thanx for all the advices I'm still in the process of settling down. Fortunately company I work for provides accomodation and transport to/from work, but I want to travel around a bit and see some places of interest

The Swiss transportation system is the best in the world. For an EF view on how to use it, see Fact Sheet #2 - Swiss Railways.
