introductory post

Hi all,

I'm (yet) another newbie to this forum. Getting great info out of it so far.
Coming to Zurich in July for a year's postdoc in the UofZ, from Dublin.
I hear lots about high costs of living in Zurich, and for starters on here, Im interested in hearing from fellow my Irish and how they'd compare Zurich with Dublin.

cheers anyway, for now!

Re: introductory post

Well, I'm only Irish insofar as one of my Dad's ancestors came over, and hence the Irish surname (McGrath), but having been to Dublin last year, I can tell you that the cost difference wasn't as much as I expected. Things were noticeably cheaper in Dublin than Zurich, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't nearly as drastic as, say, anywhere in Italy.

Have fun over here and good luck!!!!

Re: introductory post

Cant claim to be Irish, although sometimes I dream....yeah, righto. Anyway Ive spent a little time in Dublin, and I would have actually said Dublin was more expensive, but maybe I havent spent enough time there. Anyway, really I wanted to ask, whats your postdoc on?

Cheers,
Alex.

Re: introductory post

Hey guys - the postdoc is in chemistry. Finished my PhD in January and since then have been doing, well, nothing - I think working in Switzerland may be a bit of a change - really looking forward to it.

Many thanks for the answer to my question. I am sure I'll have to judge it for myself - we all have differing expenses etc.

I've been browsing www.le-shop.ch which is the migros (I believe) online store - groceries for one don't seem too expensive. I'm also quite looking forward to checking out Ikea.. such novelty value.

Re: introductory post

Correct - Migros bought a stake in LeShop a couple of years ago. Maybe all of it, I don't recall... got to speak to the CEO during a school project at the HSG last year, they've got a good setup going. You'll note, though, that LeShop offers more than just Migros goods!

As for the novelty of Ikea, that always cracks me up. Buying the world's cheapest furniture in one of hte world's most expensive countries....
