Hello from Zurich

Gruezi!

I have recently joined the forum and thought I should introduce myself.

My name in Elena. I am from Atlanta GA in the USA, but have just relocated to Zurich in January after living in Dublin, Ireland for 4years.

I am currently unemployed and trying to learn German. I have just started an intensive German course this week. My husband is German so I hope to learn quickly... it is a challenging language! I am eager to learn so that I can start searching for employment as being a hausfrau is not for me!

I am eager to meet people and am always up for a drink in the pub! Happy Paddy's Day everyone!

Elena

Re: Hello from Zurich

Hi Elena and welcome.
One thing you should do is tell your husband to speak only German to you. I know it is hard but it will pay back.
And oh, when you fight, you may do it in English

Hello Elena and welcome to the forum. I've had the pleasure to meeting another fellow Georgia peach at one of the forum events.

Re: Hello from Zurich

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Aki, I know getting my husband to speak German to me is key, but he can be a bit impatient at times. We are working at it though and I'm watching German tv... so hopefully I am on the road to fluency.

Imgen, I am very much looking forward to the four seasons here as opposed to the Irish rain... Hopefully today is the start of the good weather!!!

Lost inbroad, hopefully I will find more Georgia peaches on here as well.. never met any in Ireland so hopefully there are some here.

Chat soon

Elena

Re: Hello from Zurich

Welcome Elena,
I don't know how keen you are on learning German but I will give you some tips on how I did it... Definately a good thing to watch German TV. But for me, key was actually chatting in German, finding German speaking friends (your husband) to talk to, and listening to German music and translating the lyrics... Some helpful resources got me started were http://dict.leo.org (biligual dictionary) and in the very beginning I used something like google translator to help me understand and write full sentences. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any questions.
LG Jennifer

Re: Hello from Zurich

Hello Elena & welcome!

Big difference between Switzerland and Atlanta! The summers here are much easier to cope with, even without central air. I do miss the crepe myrtles though...

My husband is a good tutor, but I couldn't let him be my teacher (I'm also married to a German). It helps to have him speak German at home, as long as he'll switch to English to argue
