Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

Hello all

I am an English prep school teacher currently tutoring children for 11+ and 13+ entrance exams to public schools and other senior schools here in London; the other half of my time, during the evenings and weekends, I do one to one tuition for the same children. I'm thinking of coming to either Zurich or Geneva for a few months, in September 2010, and trying to set up there as a tutor for any English-speaking families there, trying to get there children into schools in the UK at 11 or 13, or for any families wanting English or Maths tutoring for their children. I've an excellent CV, experience at leading prep schools here in London, and think I should therefore be a highly plausible option for families looking for a good tutor.

What I don't know, though, is whether to give this a shot in Zurich or Geneva. What I need is a demand for my services, which I should imagine would not be a problem in either Zurich or Geneva, given their international make-up, high no of ex-pats, etc. What I would like is a change from smelly old London....I'd like a much smaller place, somewhere crime-free, clean, friendly, everything that London isn't! Zurich and Geneva would of course both seem to tick these boxes. So what separates them please? Which to go for? All opinions welcome.

Many thanks.

That of course should have been 'their children'! Speedy typing, rather than a lack of understanding of when to use their/there/they're!!

to EF, NorthLondoner!

After ten (I think) posts you will magically get an Edit button, allowing you to correct typos.

One thing to think of is your life outside work. If you speak French Geneva might be preferable, if German Zurich.

It is very easy to survive without knowing the local language, but a moderate knowledge of it does make life easier.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

Hello NorthLondoner,

I write to you not as an experienced ex-pat, but as a soon-to-be ex-pat who has spent time in the Suisse Romande, and will be re-locating to Lausanne. Since you seem to be in the prospecting stage, I'll just throw out the question, have you considered Lausanne? Lausanne, as you may know, has a significant non-Swiss population, people wanting to learn English, and ex-pats wanting to maintain their connections to English. Lausanne is even smaller than Geneva, and may be too small for your taste/needs - but if you were in Lausanne you'd have access to the Geneva market too, (depending on how much commuting you had an appetite for.)

I also suggest my-soon-to-be hometown for your deliberations, because Lausanne is beautiful, a little less gray during the winter (from what I hear) than Geneva, and, if you love water, it also has great access to Lac Leman.

Best of luck

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

I'm not sure that there will be a large enough demand for tutoring children to get into English schools in either Zurich or Geneva, so you may have to broaden your scope a bit. One thing that comes immediately to mind would be to contact some of the British schools in Switzerland and ask their advice. Perhaps one of them would even have a position for you. Here's the link for a school near Montreux: St. George's School. They're opening a junior school in Verbier in September 2010.

Good luck!

And thanks to Acting Swissish AfroJew and Sojoh also. I'll have to do a bit of research on Lausanne.

Greetings from a wintery London on Good Friday and Happy Easter to all.

Hello Northlondoner Kindly do be advised that, regardless of whether you pick Zurich or Geneva, the level of educational services is quite high. In regards to teaching, preference is often given to native English speakers. Almost all of the schools do require both a teaching degree and university degree in the specific subject (English major, for instance).
There are many qualified teachers here due to the international environment, competition could be tough.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

Hello : Just in case you are still in the debate process take a good breath and think of this info. You have 6 private international schools in Geneva and many of them are right in the hiring stage for professors. Children come from all over the world with the families and Geneva is bragging there are over 100 different nationalities . Good luck and may be it is time you use your wild card to go for it.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

because of the enormous demand for English tutoring in the Geneva to Montreux area, that area is of course is the right place for you to be. Just think of the countless international organizations and corporations. Pick a place in the near countryside if not fond of Geneva.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

Hi,
As a teacher in one of the international schools here, I would just question whether you'll have enough work to keep you going.
Often teachers in the schools pick up tutoring for kids in real need as a way to earn a little extra money and in many years teaching here I haven't known one child take exams to get into English Public Schools at the age of 11 or 13 so I wonder whether that side of your CV will have much demand.
Anyway, you're probably here by now so good luck and I hope you're doing well.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

My eldest child just finished Geneva English School (year 6). Our son will continue at an IB school, but some of his classmates will continue in the British system.

There are also at least two more British schools near Geneva, so I'd imagine they also have children who need help preparing for their exams.

Geneva English School
Geneva Secondary School
Institut International de Lancy

Council of British International Schools

Hello Macdoodle, Serafina, Bertrand, Phenomenon

a very, very (!) late thank you for your replies also.....I hadn't been back on the website since posting, until today......

Still in London at present, circumstances (and fear of change!) didn't allow me to make a move at all then, or since.....but screwing up my courage once more, again, let's see what, if anything, transpires this time!

Best wishes from the first day of Spring here in London, though it's cold and rainy, what's new.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

So, April 2010 you ask a querstion, get some good answers and give bugger all feedback.

Fast forward nearly 5 years to March 2015.

Back again making timid post and awaiting reaction before asking more questions.

Sort it out yourself, best way and no flak.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

I can't see any point in only coming for a few months. If you want to move to Switzerland then make the commitment to do so and don't um and ah about it.

More on self-employment here in case you don't go for being hired by a school option.

You may also need to have your teaching qualifications recognised.

"You are a teacher, special education teacher, speech therapist, psychomotor therapist and would like to work in Switzerland at an upper-secondary school within the general education sector.

Nit-picking; Spring doesn't start until the 20th of March!

If you're still considering Geneva, I'd suggest contacting the international schools and offering your services, or perhaps the UN, and the Red Cross.

Re: Zurich or Geneva?? Advice welcomed.

Dear Today Only

That's a very cross response.

If you look above you will see I did thank those who replied at the time, so hardly bugger all feedback. The replies I didn't see around that time, as I didn't log back on again, I thanked yesterday, as soon as I saw them. I am really grateful
to everyone then, and since yesterday, who has taken
the time to give me their thoughts.

I'm not awaiting any reaction and have no more questions!

As for the start of Spring, yes, not the equinox yet, I was just thinking seasons, as Spring is March-May.

Standing corrected and admonished all-round!

Thanks again to all who have replied.
