Just moved to Thalwil for Guildford!

Hi

I have just moved this month from Guildford, surrey to Thalwil due to my husbands work.

We are really enjoying the beautiful start of summer and the parks and lakes! I have a 2 year old son and another on the way in June! A girl it is forecast!

I have yet to join any playgroups but hope to meet more families soon!

I'm looking to do the reverse move. I know Guildford is quite expensive.
What would be a good income level for a family of 3. Would have to rent for two years at 1st.

Re: Just moved to Thalwil for Guildford!

Hi

We have just rented our 3 bed house in Guildford for £1,500 a month. On top of that you have bills amounting to around £300 a month. Compared to Zurich Guildford is quite cheap. Its a lovely area and great for families, there are some cheaper area to moved outside guildford like cranleigh (and check out the cranleigh golf and country club which we love and joined for ages!) or Chilworth or Bramley. I worked on a household budget of £800 for food, petrol, clothes and bits. Then you have rent and bills on top. Eating out is cheap compared to Zurich. Check out the - Thai Terrace in Guildford, Percy Arms in Chilworth, Seahorse pub in Shalford - they are all lovely! Also the walks around there in the hills are beautiful! Good luck hope this helps.

Welcome to EF and Zurich Vicki

my father was posted at Pystock in Farnborough when I was a kid and I loved the area. I was driving over the Hogs Back just a few weeks ago and it brought back lots of memories.

Re: Just moved to Thalwil for Guildford!

Hi Vicki
I got married at Newlands Corner - very pretty area
Thalwil is great and if you head over to Park Im Gruene you will meet loads of expats with kids. Just smile lots and talk English loudly and someone will say hi and introduce themselves - it is swarming with expats on sunny days and it is the school holidays at the moment.

I used to live in Horgen - couple of villages down - but am out in kanton Schwyz now.

Re: Just moved to Thalwil for Guildford!

Hi Vicki,

Welcome to the forum!

My husband grew up in Cranleigh/Godalming and we live just south of Horsham now. We are moving to CH in June. Probably will end up either in Zug or Thalwil although my job is in ZH. We've got a 14 month old daughter so would be good to meet up and compare notes when I arrive!

xx

Re: Just moved to Thalwil for Guildford!

Hi Vicki,

Just moved to Thalwil myself in March with my husband and baby girl Eva 18months old we have come from London highgate. I agree with the expensive side of Zurich, i was in shock even for food shopping! Eating out definitely not as good as London unless you are paying Michelin prices! Even that i think you find little places that are ok but you get use to the prices for everything.

I have yet to meet anyone really in thalwil have a friend but she lives quite a distance. Otherwise i hear its very international and the Park Im Greune is brilliant for kids and having a day out.

Hope to keep in touch

Tala
