Hi Commuter who needs help

Hi all,

I'm a member of the ToyTown in Germany so know how annoying it is when a newbie ask questions that can be easily searched for. But now being a newbie I realised that 1. just getting around an unfamiliar site takes ages 2. Searching includes reading loads of threads which ends up being confusing. I did read a few and an hour later I am none the wiser.....

So here I go -

I am a contractor and have secured a contract in Pfaefikon. I will be comutting Mon to Friday from Munich so what to stay in Pfaefikon even though on one thread it was called the arse of the world. I am confused about my best options:

1. Should i live in Pfaefikon as the taxes (inc. Insurance) are lower - I was told 21% compared to 30% in Zurich
2. I going thru Hays who are not offering me a Pay Roll option - so I can off set my travelling and hotel costs.
3. Do I have to have a fixed address to pay taxes as "PAYE"
4. Does any one know any apartment hotels in the Pfeafikon area?
5. I am speaking to some Pay Roll companies but the options for non PAYE seem a bit extreme (E101) and I am not sure Hays will go for them anyhow?

Any advice would be great as I start Monday and do not want to make the wrong decision....

Thanks for any help or pointers you can give....

Stanford......the newbie

PS. Prior to now I have been commuting from Munich to London and Basingstoke (4 yrs) so am looking forward to the 1 hr shorter commute - yeah its 5 hrs to Pfaefikon from Munich. I might drive instead...

Re: Hi Commuter who needs help

Glad to see you've taken the time to get to know the site. We try to keep things organised, which is why we request that people do not ask questions in the introductions forum - as detailed in the big sticky which appears at the top of the intro forum:

Posting your introduction - please read first!

Now about your questions - please keep separate issues on separate threads - otherwise we end up with a big mish-mash of information which people have trouble locating later (and you know how that feels don't you?)

Some of your questions (about tax and payroll are related), I do recall a few threads about contractor type issues which would be the best place for those questions. About tax, I'm sure we've covered those before, the bottom line is if you want to save tax, then move somewhere where the rates are lower. Without saying how much you earn it is impossible for anyone to have the information to give you an answer. See my signature also on a guide how to search effectively.

Just to be clear again - use the intro thread as a way to introduce yourself and get to know others - not for specific issues you need help with.

Pfäffikon SZ I assume? There's Pfäffikon ZH just to confuse the issue but SZ will have lower tax rates.

You do want to be considered domiciled in Switzerland. The deductions will be better than Germany.

And if you're lucky it's 4 hours to Munich - but I would seriously consider the train for the journey given your Monday/Friday timings.

Re: Hi Commuter who needs help

Sorry I didn't see the rules about not asking questioning in an Introduction....

I shall post something in the relevant forums. It just hard wading thru and trying to work out what applies to me or is best to me in my specific situation......na ja I take a deep breath and have another go later......

The Newbie Confused and dazed and looking forward to working the arse of the world Pfaefikon - could just be like working in Basingstoke...Stanford....

Stanford a confused Macunian - scally who got educated and now lives in Munich - loves Munich and is looking forward to discovering the great delights and frights in Zurich-Pfaefikon and Switerzland at least during the month.

PS. I tend to ramble as well........

Sorry, but since you've raised living issues as well that would just cause confusion.

Instead use the rest of this thread to tell us a little bit about yourself, a bit of general chit chat, and try your serious stuff in the rest of the forum.

By the way - the usual "read this first" stuff are generally located at the top of each area as stickies - which make it easier for you to notice them (hopefully).

Maybe you can also use this thread for something like "Any other toy town Munich people on here?", they might be able to point out some of the differences between that site and this site (I don't use it myself so I don't know).

Re: Hi Commuter who needs help

@LobRockters,

Yeah - I suppose we could even start a thread in Misc...scally (proli) coming to town!!!

I think your two liner has helped me - I'll most probs stay PAYE and take the train...... It is amazing how a calming voice or in this case words can stop someone panicking.... I'll give the Pay roll company a miss and my car which is a crap Nissan Micra 12-15 years a miss too. My wife has warned me already I am not allowed to drive it down to Switerzland as it is too dangerous....

Case Closed....
