| | | [Wanted] VHS player
looking for a VHS player that can play the American NTSC tapes, or ideally a multi-format VHS player that can play both NTSC and PAL.
anyone has one that they would like to sell/get rid off?
thanks!

No one so far?
I thought that as we are already in 2011, most people would have a VHS player somewhere just gathering dust and would perhaps be glad to sell or get rid off? ps. I, fortunately or unfortunately, have loads of VHS from various dance competitions... in the world of ballroom dancing, DVD was a very recent "invention" only available from 2007 or 2008! |

Some players will play NTSC and output PAL, some won't. If your TV doesn't accept NTSC signals then watch which VHS player you get!

still looking for one!
I need a VHS machine that will play NTSC, anything more advanced is of course accepted too (ex: multi-region VHS players, etc.)

Well, I have two home studio VHS players and strictly speaking only need one, so I could let one go.
But these are semi-pro devices and have sync ports and other stuff you will probably never need, and they are not cheap items.
We'd also need to try some of your tapes and align the machine so that it reads your tapes optimally. If they were recorded on a normal domestic machine they may not be properly lined up. These were analog times
...and I have just had a look on e-bay and I see these machines go for silly prices anyway, so look up Panasonic NV-FS200. You may have success. But do test before you buy.

These VHS tapes are not home recorded one. They were commercial tapes purchased in the US. Does that still require testing?
Sorry, but my knowledge on this is limited to plug the VHS machine to the TV and play my tapes |

I have a couple of machines that should play Never Twice Same Color via PAL... unfortunately they are in the UK... I could see if I could get someone to go in and ship one perhaps, but i'm not sure what the cost would be plus customs are bound to charge VAT and fees....

I bought a new one last year (although it was a combined VHS/DVD) with PAL and NTSC from Conforama - but should be available from most electrical retailers.
[there is limited choice of new VHS players alone (without combined DVD), as they are slowly becoming obsolete]

That's interesting. Do you have a model number, perhaps?
Conforama: so not expensive, then. I'll look into it.

You want something like this, correct? http://www.englishforum.ch/sale-want...ystem-vcr.html
There is still one but we were keeping it to view some old VHS tapes from North America. If I knew where to get the tapes converted I would sell the second machine. Can someone help with this ?

After what TiMow just said, I'm not so sure anymore. The machines have an NTSC lamp on the front and I naively assumed that means they can read NTSC tapes.
But I have never physically tried an NTSC tape, and it is not outside the realms of possibility that to watch an NTSC tape, you need an NTSC TV. I'd need to try it out (or read the manual again - todo tonight).
As far as testing goes, just try some of your tapes in the machine to see if it works at all. That's the easiest and most important. Transport must work, rewind, ff, play. And bring a blank one, too, to see if it still records (if that's important to you).
Other things, like snowy pictures or black-and-white only, or jumpy pictures can be due to many things, from dirty heads or misalignment (fixable) to worn-out heads (not fixable, or very expensive to fix). If a person is selling a VCR machine, then hopefully they will have at least run a head cleaner tape on it.
Commercially bought tapes can be pretty bad. To keep costs low, the tape material is usually cheap. And with some tapes, the binding material begins to perish over time, which then means the metal recording surface starts to come off. This even happened with a well-known make of very expensive studio tape! | Quote: | | | | | oh, one more question... the "Panasonic NV-FS200," I assume that'll play both NTSC and PAL?

If you have a wintv card in your pc then you can just hook it up into that and convert them to any format.
if you want (and there isn't too many of them lol) if you drop the videos and player round to ours I'll convert them, or at least give it a go | | This user would like to thank bigblue2 for this useful post: | |
