Zurich - Getting a sofa through a door

For any expert removalists, here's my predicament ...

I bought a lovely L-shaped sofa from another forum member. A neighbour helped me get it up three floors to the door of my apartment. The smaller piece is in my living room but we couldn't get the larger piece through. We're convinced it can be done, but we just can't work it out.

So I'm willing to offer rewards to anyone who can move the sofa two metres - from just outside my door to just inside. Make an offer - money, or beer, or pancakes, or a forum post praising your astonishing skills ...

(I called a few removal companies but they quoted me 250 fr minimum - the sofa only cost 500.)

I'm in Stiglenstrasse, Zurich. Please PM me!!!

Can the arm/s be removed? You may find some bolts under the covers. It's usually arms that get in the way.

If that works I'll send address via pm for beer.

Hm.... I did it once (actually, I was only directing). It was also a L-sofa and it also seemed impossible to get it through the door. It was a Millimeter job but we got it in within hours. My advise - try to remove the door first, and then work out with an angle you are bringing it in.

Re: Zurich - Getting a sofa through a door

If it is not too wide stand it up on one end and rotate it around the doorframe opposite the hinged side. The L shape can then be fed through the opening. If this doesn't work, and you've tried this with all cushions removed the next step would be to remove the door - not too difficult - then try again. I doubt the sofa comes apart easily. Good luck!

The feet. They get in the way. They can usually be unscrewed giving you the room that you need. There could be lining covering the bottom and you might have to gently remove it to get to the screws. The lining may be held in place with staples so you will need a staple gun to fix it again. Small upholstery nails will work too.

Man, I was too late to thank your post, but I want you to know that someone out there thought your post was hilarious and the humour wasn't completely wasted

Re: Zurich - Getting a sofa through a door

No matter what you do in the future, remember this:

My nephew in Geneva bought a sofa that would barely fit in the elevator of his apartment building. The elevator was one of those without an inside door (when it was moving, the passengers were right next to the inside of the shaft). Then the owner modified the elevator (perhaps he had to, for safety reasons) and installed an inside door. You can imagine the rest! When he moved out, the sofa would not fit in the elevator anymore. He had to mobilize some of his friends to lower it out of a window three stores to the street.

Re: Zurich - Getting a sofa through a door

This is too late for you now pal, but when choosing an apartment in future, make sure that the doorways have the patented Ikea trademark stamped on the door frame to ensure complete compatibility with all of their products.

You obviously tried muscling an imperial sized sofa through a metric door frame. Do the math.
