Strapping Young Man desperate for work, Lausanne

Finding a job here in lausanne is not proving to be so simple.

I have a B permit, speak perfect english and decent french for learning it only 8 months. I dont have too many qualifications unfortunately, Ive done one year of art school in america (major-Photography, minor-Film), and start my first year at ECAL in lausanne mid/septembre.

I'm in desperate need of work in the months to come, I would love to find something where being artistically inclined made a difference, but I would be more than happy to find a job that was just manual labor! I love animals, I'm good with children, etc, but I'm not so sure a family would be so quick to hire me to watch their children seeing as i have no professional experience with infants.

If you are looking for a healthy young man to employ, or happen to know of something available, please please please let me know.

Merci Beaucoup!

Welcome to EF. I really hope you'll find something here. Do you need accommodation and board?

Would you be prepared to take casual handiman work from time-to-time, if you're not doing anything else?
I want someone to attach a bookcase to a wall with an electric-drill, but I haven't yet bought the bookcase.
My husband is 84 and just can't deal with that kind of thing anymore.
I'm near the Tribunale Federale and Mon Repos.
Send me a pm with your 'phone number and I'll contact you, if you're interested in that sort of casual work.

Re: Strapping Young Man desperate for work, Lausanne

@Odile

merci, Currently i am a little anxious about board, i have very little money to last me until i find a job, and i hope to soon find a room or coloq situation either for the summer, or that would last during the school year after septembre as well. During a few weeks in june and july i have temporary places to stay, but there are also some holes in my schedule that have me worried.

If you happen to know any information that could be helpful, i would greatly appreciate it! Life is taking some rather sudden twists and turns, so i am in a pretty confused state you could say.

Thanks Again
Tom

You could swallow your pride and ask all the supermarkets if they have a job.

MacDonalds are always looking for people.

Also ask at all the cafés along the lake front for seasonal work. Otherwise try the employment agencies Kelley and similar, see below.

Re: Strapping Young Man desperate for work, Lausanne

Great list from Itti.

Why not work in a supermarket? Quite a good job for a student. The pay isn't so bad considering the type of job it is. Plus you don't have to deal with the grease that you would at McDs.

Good luck!

Re: Strapping Young Man desperate for work, Lausanne

i finally have a chance today to sit at the computer long enough to work on the list posted above. Last week i had already tried all the supermarkets, its not as easy to find an opening as one would hope.

As for mcdonalds.... ive gotta be honest, after the week ive had i think i would sooner jump in front of a car. It just seems to much.

thanks again everybody

Even though it may be a crap place to work you'll have to change your way of thinking and stop misleading us....desperate means desperate...and McDonalds in that situation must be an option.

Seeing though you say you are a big bloke why not decide to wake-up really early one day, shave, and then visit every suitable Hotel in your area and ask for a job as a Porter/Night Porter armed with a basic CV...you may be surprised what this kind of initiative could bring you.

Correct. As such you can and should totally forget about this option without the appropriately recognized training, qualifications and professional experience in place to do so.

So nicely put oh self appointed guardian of all things small. Remember mothers and others, if you happen to see a strapping young man hanging around at the park, school books under one arm and Cv under the other, do not under any circumstances, offer him a job looking after your children.

I think McDonalds is absolutely the right choice (or more precisely, Burger King Niederdorf which has been open 4 weeks and probably isn't fully staffed as yet). The pay is good, the conditions are good, there are lots of other immigrants to talk to and get tips from etc and most importantly it'll get you out the house, waking up every morning, paying taxes and generally feeling like a productive member of Swiss society.

Well I'd generally agree with this. BUT there are lots of people applying for jobs as, and working as, often wrongly called Au Pairs/Nannies all over the place, and as such I don't think the OP as a young man should me any more excluded from working with kids. He might be ideal to help during the holidays with very active bored kids.

Just an abstract point, but isn't it strange that you can't work with kids without having the qualifications and generally proving your not 'one of them type' yet you can actually have kids without the slightest check on your suitability to act as a parent!

It is indeed a funny ole world in that respect.

It's a sad fact that even with maximum childcare training and certification, there are no guarantees that things can't go badly wrong at times...

Re: Strapping Young Man desperate for work, Lausanne

but hey you are in lausanne and it's festival time. check with events like paleo, montreux, even the cite and see if they need volunteers at least. they are likely to need some english speaking people around and it's worth a shot...also try holy cow. the guy who owns it and the people that work there are nice (i think he is american) and it is a step up from mac do's. also try bars, like the great escape or king size. i'll keep thinking of things in the area, if i hear of anything, i'll let you know.

best of all start to tell everyone you come into contact with that you are looking. even when at the supermarket or kiosk. people are usually willing to ask around when you do- good luck!
