Registered Dietitian seeking overseas employment

I am currently working in a hospital in Charleston, South Carolina as a dietitian. My husband and I are interested in possibly moving to another country and experiencing a new life. He's in construction management. Any opportunities that might be known out there...please share. This would be something we would persue in the next couple of years, but wanted to see what was available out there now. Also, links for jobs in my field. Thanks for any input!

Re: Registered Dietitian seeking overseas employment

Hi,
I am a dietitian in the UK & i'm in a similar situation.
My boyfriend is Swiss & we are looking at moving over there, so I have been trying to figure out my options too.

So far I found out that dietitians do exist in Switzerland, however job opportunities may be limited depending on language skills. I speak VERY basic German & so have been looking for English speaking jobs - these seem to mainly be in private hospitals & nutrition related companies, and so far I haven't had much luck (although I haven't been looking very hard)!

If you are applying for a job involving a foreign language, you have to pass a language test: http://www.sprachenportfolio.ch/esp_e/wasist/index.htm

Good sites to look on are:

Good luck & if you have any success, let me know!!

Re: Registered Dietitian seeking overseas employment

as Rebecca hinted, you're seriously limiting your marketability without one or more local languages. Add to that the fact that you're non-EU and you have a mountain rather than a hill to climb.

In the Basel area, there are many pharma companies. Do you have skills that can be transposed into positions they might offer?

I am an RD living in Zurich with my husband and since I don't have a work visa I haven't really tried to look for a job; however, surely I would need to know German, which I do not. I have been surprised by how many do not know English or know very little English. German is quite a difficult language and I've been here since June and have learned a bit but not nearly enough to be able to work in health care. Unless it is an English-speaking private company of some sort that would hire an RD, it would be imperative to know how to speak and read German. Otherwise you could not be able to read a medical chart. It has been a bit frustrating but I am settling on the fact that I will not be working while I am here. I've even tried looking into taking graduate courses but although the course may state it is in English, any that I have looked into also say you need to know German. Ugh! I hope you have luck finding a job where ever your path leads.
