50 years old is not old at all for me. I have been looking for a baby sitter for long time and feel very uncomfortable to get those 20's girl taking care of my baby even though they're those from Red Cross who claims that it provides a 3 days training for baby caring for those members...(are you kidding me --I should expect someone have a 3 days baby caring training to take care of my baby. They barely know about how a baby is borne!!)

Your profile sounds very professional. Might be you could go through other channels like this forum....

by the way, where're you in Switzerland? I would love to get your help if you're around my canton.

Definitely not too old to take care of children. However, in regards to getting an Au Pair visa there is an age limit. I don't recall now, or don't know if it has changed, but I think it was 35. ( I wanted one of my aunts to come help me with my kids and I wanted to get her an au pair visa (she has a U.S. passport) but couldn't because of her age.

I know that rules have recently changed (before you did all the paper work yourself and now you need to go through a government agency to get approval and now you have more choice of countries to get a girl from) BUT, honestly, I doubt the age requirement has changed much. They see it as an educational exchange rather than a job exchange. It is really a pity because I much rather have someone older for my 3 spirited kids!

Do ask the agencies about the age limit for an Au Pair/Nanny visa. They SHOULD know.

Best wishes!

Re: how to find a good nanny agency to find me a job in switzerland

Hello, I am a nanny and have found employment both through an agency and by myself. While there is a lot of call for child-carers he in Swizerland, for some reason I also found the agency I was registered with very slow at finding me work. This could be due to parents having to pay such high fees to the agency, I was getting CHF25- per hour from the parents who were paying double that to the agency. I have had more luck searching for jobs myself, and being English speaking I can advertise myself as an English teaching nanny, which is hifghly desirable here and worth a couple of extra francs in the pay-packet.
I'm 42 and while my age wasn't a problem getting a job, I did realize that there are two kinds of mothers out there. Ones who employ maturer women knowing that these women have more experience, and there's those mothers who want their nannies to do it their way, and they don't want older ones who might have views of their own.
Wouldn't it be perfect if you could find a family from America who are coming to Switzerland and who could bring you with them when they come.
Whatever happens, good luck!

Her location says USA. But if you offer her a job then maybe she could get a visa, she'll be happy, you'll be happy! Oh, what a wonderful world it could be!
