Are you (or anyone else) aware of any other organisations that deal with this issue?

It looks like the ZH chapter is not active at the moment, but several of the others are seeking help...

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

Something else people might consider is prison visiting. There are often people sitting in prison who don't have German (or French or Italian ) as their first language. Sorry, don't know who you could contact though.

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

Bartholemew (and others), thanks very much for the links. You mentioned a friend of "Mr. B" did this for a while. Any chance of me being able to speak with this person? Might be a better way to learn anything that should be learned beforehand. Time to put my money (or rather time) where my mouth is....

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

Mark, let me ask if they're still in touch and get back to you with a private message.
One of my friends worked in a home for asylum seekers for awhile during Uni, I'll ask if she knows anybody who did volunteer work as well.

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

Red Cross have a program, where one visits people at the Airport prison who are waiting for an empty seat to get deported. The idea is that one lends a listening ear and sees that they are being treated properly before they leave.

If there are enough interested people here, maybe we could even try to organize something on our own. Something along the lines of tutoring disadvantaged students in English? Just an idea...

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

Thank you all for the suggestions for Volunteering in Zurich. What a great thread. I too am looking to help out in any capacity one night a week and have contacted the Red Cross and Kl-Einstein organisation. As a non-(Swiss) German speaker, I guess I may have problems, but I will post my findings when I get feedback.

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

I've recently seen two ads for volunteers. The city's nursing homes are searching for volunteers that can work regularly, and churches sometimes are too. It seems like volunteers ready to give their time to the elderly are in high demand.

Re: Volunteering in Zurich

This is a fantastic thread! I will also contact the Red Cross today to try and set up an appointment..

I agree given the number of people who have expressed interest that we should try and set something up as a group.

I am in Zurich and happy to co-ordinate establishing a team here?
