Re: Pilates Instructor Wanted in Zurich

I know someone (South African living in ZH for a few years) who has a pilates studio. I wouldn't be surprised if you know her, I'm sure these circles are small, but I'll send her this post.

I have one silly question. How do you actually pronounce "pilates"?

I caused much joy for locals with my pronounciation of mount Pilatus. Something like pi-lat-us. Rather than the locals pee-laa-tuus

Re: Pilates Instructor Wanted in Zurich

The English-speaking world seem to insist on pronouncing it Pill-art-ease. There seems to be no logical reason for this. The guy that invented it, Joseph Pilates was a German, but moved to the states. Even when he lived in the states he never ever pronouced his name as Pill-art-ease.

The correct pronunciation is therefore pi-lart-es if it were spoken in German, but a slightly anglocised version would then be puh-lart-es. But in no way would it be pill-art-ease.

Interestingly enough if you point this out to most English speakers, including pilates instructors they will continue to use the incorrect pronunciation. I'm guessing it is because they are afraid that everyone else will think they are mispronouncing it.

Most dictionaries I've seen also show it with the incorrect pronunciation.

ANyway - that's the trivia for the day

Here's the link which discusses the pronunciation. So next time an instructor (incorrectly) corrects your pronunciation send them to that link. But it won't make a difference - they will read and it continue to mispronounce it

Pilatus make very good small to medium sized propeller planes. They are used almost exclusively by the Australian Flying Doctor service.

Re: Pilates Instructor Wanted in Zurich

I saw one of Lynn's ads in Zurich Events- they had placed her Pilates ad right next to another ad for Pilatus the mountain. How to cause confusion!

No, its a perfect marketing idea! "Pilates on Pilatus "

I am sure a bit of altitude-induced oxygen deprivation would help maintain that power house.

Just about every day down the beach in Perth you get the RAAF boys from Pearce AFB doing a coastal run in their PC9's.
