It's not about shopping at Walmart, it's about the people you see shopping at Walmart and the outfits they wear. Stuff that makes you go "WTF?". Look at it as a piece of Americana you' never see as a visitor.

They have a wide selection--almost everything, discount retail. They have a very tight business plan which allows them to undercut their competitors prices significantly.

For those on a tight budget, you can save a lot at in a one stop shopping location.

And practically everything they sell is imported from China. They are the scourge of the Earth. Wherever a Wal-Mart has opened, local businesses have suffered and shuttered. Where Wal-Marts have not been able to open, diversity of goods and services has flourished.

They've become a stereotype of poor rednecks, NASCAR fans, and trailer trash throughout the US. See Where The Heart Is, featuring Natalie Portman as a teenage mother whose boyfriend abandons her at a Wal-Mart.

Not a big fan of Walmart....mainly because I couldn't stand the caliber of people that you had to brush elbows with (see pictures above). I will say that for folks on a tight budget, it (or stores similar to it) can be very helpful. You can do your grocery shopping, clothes shopping, home improvement, medicine, sports all at the same place. If you have the means, I suggest supporting small business. But if you are trying to feed your family on a tiny budget, your last concern is feeling sorry for higher priced small local stores. Being a former educator in the US, I can attest that Walmart made the difference between surviving and starving for a handful of my students' families.
