sympathy/condolence message in German

Evening All

A Swiss neighbour sadly passed away this week and we'd like to send a card round to the family offering our condolences.

We were not close to the family but would chat/greet each other whenever we met so am looking for something quite general, along the lines of:

We are very sorry for your loss and offer you our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

Can anyone kindly help me out with an appropriate message/translation?

Thanks so much

JosK

First, you might want to go to Coop or Migros. Next to the birthday-cards, theres the condolence-cards (labeled with "Anteilnahme", "Trauer" and related words).

Looking at http://www.trauerspruch.de

some of the ones here seem to be a good fit:
http://www.trauerspruch.de/formulierungen05.htm

"Wir möchten Dir/Ihnen unser aufrichtiges Mitgefühl und unsere Anteilnahme übermitteln"
Or
"Wir übermitteln euch unser aufrichtiges Beileid zum Verlust eures lieben Vaters".
"Wir sind in Gedanken bei Euch/Ihnen"

(depending if you are "per du" or "per sie" with the familiy.

You can add a religious (or otherwise thoughtful) quote.

Or you could write that you will miss the chats with him.

Re: sympathy/condolence message in German

Thanks Rainer

Really helpful. We were on Sie terms with the family and it was the wife who died so my message is for the husband. Would this change the suggested text you have given me at all ? (I understand the du/sie will change accordingly)

Thanks again.

Re: sympathy/condolence message in German

Ah, sorry.
Had automatically assumed it was the father...
Anyway.
It would be
"Wir möchten Ihnen unser aufrichtiges Mitgefühl und unsere Anteilnahme übermitteln"
or
"Wir übermitteln Ihnen unser aufrichtiges Beileid zum Verlust Ihrer lieben Frau (und Mutter (if there is a family left behind, instead of just the husband))".
"Wir sind in Gedanken bei Ihnen"
