To Address an Ambassador ...

Hi…

How does one address an ambassador of a country.. An ambassador is going to visit our company and my boss has to give a speech.. So how does he address him ? As follows...

"I would like to welcome your Excellency Mr.XYZ.."
Doesn't this sound too formal and a bit out dated??

Would really appreciate any suggestions

Thanks for your time

Re: To Address an Ambassador ...

Formal address
"I would like to welcome His Excellency Mr Ima Smallone, the Lilliputian Ambassador, to our annual all-the fondue-you-can-eat session here tonight..."
Face-to-face, less formal
"Ambassador, pray do have another Ferrero Rocher."

No. Sounds about right. Also make sure to check if the Ambassador has other styles, ranks or titles. Cant remember for sure now, but I remember vaguely that the US address their ambassadors differently - "the honourable (name)" versus "your excellency" like other countries do.

If in doubt, always check with the Secretary of the Ambassador.

It's always his or her excellency in a speech or letter. Subsequently and socially it's just 'Ambassador . . . " for men and women.

The recommended social form of address to an Ambassador is as follows:
Beginning of letter
Dear Ambassador

End of letter
Believe me, My dear Ambassador
Yours sincerely

Envelope
His Excellency M Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, CMG, LVO
The French Ambassador

Verbal communication (social) Ambassador (or by name)

Name on invitation (social) The German Ambassador

Joint invitation (social)
The German Ambassador and Frau Ischinger

Re: To Address an Ambassador ...

All that is left is the thorny issue of how the "registered" partner of an ambassador is to be addressed...
