Generally speaking, the people I met/interacted with so far have been happy to switch to what I refer to "High German for dummies" i.e. speaking slowly, with simple sentences, etc. This has helped me a whole lot in making progress.

The few occasional people who insist on speaking SG to me soon get discouraged by my complete and very apparent disengagement from the conversation and total loss of interest/attention, and start then speaking something else to me. Rude on my part? Maybe. While I agree that, since we are in Switzerland, it is perfectly reasonable that people speak their language (SG) if they want to, I just feel like I am already making a big effort to learn German, which is not easy when you live in an environment where, de facto, people really speak another language, and at the moment I am just not interested.

Eventually, if I end up staying in Switzerland, my goal is to be able to understand SG or most of it, but this in my book comes only after and if I become fluent in HG.

Perspectives...
Right you are. A decent command of Standard German gives you the basis to venture out into the various dialects of this language, which means dozens of vastly different dialects in Switzerland, Western Austria, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Alsace, but also those very many dialects and accents in other parts of Germany and Austria
