Tandem English-German

I’m looking for someone who wants to improve his/her German, in exchange my English should become better , so we shouldn’t just chat – I love to chat! But I have to work on my English-skills. I want to discuss grammar, spelling, and pronunciation – all the boring stuff

It would be great to have someone, who is very interested in the little details of language and who has a broad active vocabulary.
My hobbies are reading, reading, reading, so a fellow-bookworm would be nice .
Please no one who hates Switzerland (I see the shortcomings of my country, but I love it nevertheless ). It would be great when you have an academic background, because I treasure learning over everything else. I would prefer British English, because my favourite authors are British…
I’m 26 and female. I know a lot about Swiss history and customs and my linguistic competence in German (or Swiss German) is very high.
Sorry for the mistakes in this post! But I’m posting to change the miserable fact that my English is not as good as it could be!
Write me and tell me something about you. I’m looking forward to it.

Check out the regular Englishforum meetings (usually every second week on Wednesdays). I sneaked in, they are actually quite nice even to Swiss guys like me. Trying to learn a new word with every meeting... goal is to know more English words as the natives before I die ;-).

Re: Tandem English-German

Hi Miranda,
This forum is really about english speaking folks living in Switzerland, and not at all about people trying to learn english. But, I'd say that you should join in to any discussions that you find interesting. Writing posts in english will be good practice. Furthermore, as you're Swiss, you will have a perspective into living here that most of us English speaking folks don't have. Maybe you know some good restaurants, shops, bakeries, etc...
We have a discussion right now in this Language Corner part of the forum on the differences between High German and Swiss German.
At some point, I as one of the moderators of this section, would like to put up some Frequently asked questions about learning German in Switzerland, learning Swiss-German and the differences between High German and 'Swiss-German' (or the various dialects thereof). I'm sure you'd have some comments (and probably a lot of corrections) you could make on that subject.

Thank you very much for your idea! But I'm not too keen about to crowded places filled with people I don't know . I can bear it, but I don't enjoy it, so I think I wouldn't be too happy there!
But thank you again.

Re: Tandem English-German

Hi Greg

Thank you very much for your answer! I still think it's easier to have here the chance to meet someone who wants to improve his German (for free ) and have a first class-swiss-information in exchange to English than on a German-board
The thing with the dialects is actually not very easy. Sometimes it's more fun to make some silly guesses about languages and I tend to not interupt when my non-humanities-friends start to talk about swiss-german and german and other language-issues, because I don't want to be a spoils-sport
When you have some questions I'm glad to answer and I try to write something in the thread you mentioned.

Thank you again!

I fully respect your desire... just want to note that my father told me to learn a language in a bar/pub, because there you learn the real language and the words you really need (hey, guys - thx so far!).

Hey, thx for the correction... but concerning the snuck/sneaked, dic.leo.org tells me that both is possible (http://dict.leo.org/?=snuck), even though I never thought about the possibility of "snuck".

Re: Tandem English-German

I always considered snuck to be more of an Americanism, I would always use the term "sneaked" or possibly "crept".

Heya

We use "snuck in " in Australia but also "crept in" but maybe that is the huge influence America has in Australia....

Just for your information...

Enjoy

Thx for putting me out of this misery! Must be you who taught me the "sneaked"... but wait three weeks - then I'm back from my over-the-ocean-trip ;-).
